Terry Malts – “Tumble Down”
December 13, 2011

It was no surprise that Terry Malts ruled at The Bay Brewed. In fact, it probably would have jeopardized my worldview if the band had been anything less than completely compelling. Here’s the first taste of the group’s debut LP, Killing Time, out on Slumberland in February. Terry Malts and Wax Idols will be performing on New Year’s Eve at the Hemlock Tavern.

Wednesday: Outta Sight Holiday Spectacular features holiday performances by over a dozen local bands
December 12, 2011

If you’re looking for a local music take on holiday cheer, head to the The Verdi Club on Wednesday night (8pm, Free), where Tartufi‘s monthly Dark Nights show will become the sixth annual Outta Sight Holiday Spectacular. Billed as “part drunken carol fest, part amazing showcase of local Bay Area talent,” over a dozen local bands will be there, playing two holiday songs per band. With a list that includes Tartufi, Birds & Batteries, Moomaw, Walking in Sunlight, and many, many more, the show should help warm even the most Grinch-like (and having some drinks while you’re there couldn’t hurt).

Ash Reiter‘s new video provides a nice break from our currently-cloudy weather conditions. “Heatwave” features Ash and her band with sunny skies, sunglasses and popsicles, as created by the Perez Brothers.
“Heatwave” is the title track from Ash Reiter’s new EP. In contrast (in the sense of summer vs. winter), Ash Reiter is also offering up a couple of Christmas recordings for free on her Bandcamp page. Catch the band at the Make-Out Room on December 18th.

Tim and Nicki Bluhm – “Unforgetaboutable”
December 12, 2011

Husband-and-wife duo Tim and Nicki Bluhm recently released Duets, an 8-track folk album recorded at their own local studio. Alone, Tim and Nicki have their own musical track records: Tim Bluhm as co-founder of the Mother Hips, and Nicki Bluhm of her own Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers. Together, the duo create twangy folk with lush harmonies, as evidenced in “Unforgetaboutable”.

We love this abstract video for the even more abstractly constructed “Liquefaction” by equators (the solo project of Trevor Hacker from Sunbeam Rd.). The song is one of eight on his recently released Dream Signals album, which is available in CD format in one of four lovely colors:

Daniel Hart (Broken Social Scene, Polyphonic Spree, St. Vincent) plays Hemlock Sunday
December 9, 2011

Daniel Hart has been involved in some of the more noteworthy indie rock bands over the past ten years: St. Vincent, Broken Social Scene, heck, he’s played violin for John Vanderslice!
This Sunday, he performs in a solo situation (which was formerly named ‘Physics of Meaning’) at the Hemlock with The Family Crest, Guy Fox, and Debbie Neigher. For fans of any of the bands he’s collaborated with, or those inclined toward stringed indie pop gentlemen like Owen Pallett, Hart’s set is sure to be satisfying.
