The Buttercream Gang – “Couch Games”

October 30, 2012
Written by Jason Shane

Straight outta Napa, The Buttercream Gang are back with their fourth album, Oh Brother, due in mid-November on the band’s own imprint Pitted Records. The trio (comprised of Bobby Renz, Peter Davies, and Robinson Kuntz) just dropped the record’s first single, “Couch Games,” administering heavy doses of Renz’ Afro-Caribbean-influenced guitars, with horns courtesy of Alex Garcia (tenor sax), Brendan Buss (baritone sax), and Cayce Carnahan (trumpet). Bookending the track’s unrelenting danceability and tale of a relationship’s ebb and flow is some ethereal harp-work of Charlotte Wolter.

The trio is wrapping up Oh Brother in their native wine country, with help from Jonah Strauss of Oakland’s Shipwreck Studio and Patrick Brown of SF’s Different Fur Studios handling mixing duties. A companion EP Oh Sister is set for release in the spring of 2013.
