Josh Ritter announces new album, March show at The Fox backed by the Royal City Band

Written by Jason Shane

Native son of Moscow, Idaho and indie folk stalwart, the venerable Josh Ritter recently announced that his seventh studio album – the beautiful-yet-darkly-titled The Beast In Its Tracks – will drop March 5th on Pytheas Recordings, and he also confirmed a 44-date tour of North America and the UK in 2013 with his usual compadres the Royal City Band, including a stop at Oakland’s Fox Theater on March 20th. The Beast In Its Tracks will be Ritter’s first full-length studio effort since 2010′s So Runs The World Away, and he was kind enough to share two glimpses of the new record with his fans: the single “Joy To You Baby” and a minute-plus “album teaser” video.

“Joy To You Baby” is classic Ritter. On its face, the track is a harmless dose of Americana, but behind the curtains lies a roaring swell of emotion, the product of the frontman’s stirring vocal performance, his distinctly poetic songwriting, and all-around robust instrumentation and musicianship. A limited edition 7″ vinyl, with a non-album track as a b-side, hits stores December 18th. Listen to “Joy To You Baby” here, on The Bay Bridged:

The album teaser clocks in at just over 80 seconds and features a montage of scenes with Ritter writing, recording, and playing around a beautifully redone farmhouse-looking home in the middle of a forest. It’s quite an idyllic setting that is matched only by the gently lilting riff from “Joy To You Baby” playing in the background. Watch it below:

The Beast In Its Tracks is available for pre-order in vinyl, CD, and MP3 formats, or you can snag either the “Fine Art Package” or the “Music + More” set, both of which include varying amounts of schwag and come in either vinyl or CD.
