Art
The Bay Bridged AiR spotlights a local artist every other month by allowing them to design our logo and main page banner above. If you are interested in being the next AiR send us a link to your artwork here!
Current Bay Bridged AiR: Claire Nereim
Claire is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in San Francisco. Born in Chicago in 1981, she studied Visual Art at Oberlin College. In her work she explores the relationship between form, meaning, and the invention of memory. Her work has been featured in the Believer, Paper, and Print Magazine.
You can view more of her work at her website; check out her brand new blog; and, if you’re in the mood to purchase something, you can head here.
Previous Bay Bridged AiR’s:
May 1st 2009 – June 29th 2009: Keith Gidlund

Keith Gidlund is a local photographer who is also a member of the Berkeley based indie rock band and local favorite, Winter’s Fall.
A life long Californian, Keith studied photography at SF State while apprenticing with and assisting some of the bay area’s most renowned fine art photographers. He’s continued as a traditional black and white art contractor, working with a wide range of photographers, galleries and art institutions as well as producing his own work. As a purely traditional based photographer, Keith exclusively uses film cameras and a darkroom to produce his images.
I’ve enjoyed collecting, spacial organization and fine craft my whole life and photography, for me, is all of these.
You can find more of Keith’s work here and check out his band, Winter’s Fall, here.
March 4th 2009 – April 30th 2009: Nigel Sussman

Nigel Sussman is an animator, designer, and illustrator who also plays in the local indie rock band As A People.
Originally from rural Maryland, Nigel studied drawing and painting at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, PA for two years. He then moved to Oakland for two years at California College of the Arts to complete his BFA with an illustration focus.
In his own words: “I do enjoy creating art for art’s sake, but I really feel challenged when the art is created to solve a specific problem, or serve a specific purpose, hence the choice of illustration over a more conceptually abstract artistic purpose.”
We are pleased to be showcasing his work on the site. You can check out his portfolio at here and his sketchblog over here.
December 3rd 2008 – March 3rd 2009: Benjamin Carlson

Our latest Artist-in-Residence at TheBayBridged.com is Benjamin Carlson. A 2007 graduate of California College of the Arts, Carlson is skilled in visual art, design, photography and writing, and his approach to art reflects an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration. As Carlson states on his web site:
I believe seeing these projects as a collection shows evidence of mediums and practices influencing each other in service of communicating ideas in a fresh manner. While I have learned much from respecting the integrity of different fields of practice as a starting point, I also see great potential in exploring overlaps. Design has informed my art. I experiment with using typography to create a graphic language through photography and I am continually working to connect my visual work with a social activism objective
We’d like to thank Benjamin Carlson for his terrific contribution to our site and you should check out more of his work at CarlsonCollective.com. You can find all of our past Artists-in-Residence at our Art page.
October 1st 2008 – December 2nd 2008: Katrina McHugh

We are thrilled to add another great new artist to our Artist-in-Residence family. For the next two months the artwork of Katrina McHugh will be gracing the main banner of The Bay Bridged. Born in San Francisco and raised in Santa Rosa, Katrina is a true Bay Area native. After heading down to UC Santa Barbara for college where she studied Book Arts at the College of Creative Studies, Katrina now resides in Petaluma where she continues her passion for all things letterpress printed while currently working for Dauphine Press.
We have been big fans of Katrina’s work quite a while – and you probably have been too. Her work has graced the pages of The Bay Bridged and been seen throughout the Bay Area music scene over the past few years as the artist and designer for Birdmonster. Be sure to check out more of her work over at her website, KatrinaMcHugh.com.
August 1st 2008 – September 30th 2008: Lawrence Yang

With summer halfway complete it is time for us to change out our main banner and introduce you to our newest member of The Bay Bridged Artist in Residence program, Lawrence Yang. Yang moved to the Bay Area in 2006 from Chicago where he was studying in the sciences. He ultimately changed his direction to focus on industrial design and currently works in the area of interaction design.
Taken from his website: “Lawrence Yang wrestles with informational abstractions by day and paints by night. Influenced by graffiti art and traditional Chinese painting, he employs ink, marker, and watercolor, as the permanence of this media adds a sense of immediacy to his work. Lawrence’s paintings make use of color to communicate atmosphere and emotion, and they are concerned primarily with creating order out of chaos (and vice versa). Lawrence once ate an entire bag of Fun Size Three Musketeers™. He lives in San Francisco with his imaginary pets, Cholo and Binky.”
We are thrilled to be showcasing Lawrence’s work on the site for the next two months. To see more of his outstanding art head on over to his web sites at suckatlife.com and lyyangdesign.com. You can also find more of his art at his daily updated blog, Blow at Life.
June 1st 2008 – July 31st 2008: Kenneth Do

For June and July 2008 we featured the artwork of Kenneth Do, who, when asked for a bio gave us this response:
“Hm. I don’t know what to say. I draw and I draw. I work intuitively. I know that whatever I do, anyone could do a better job.”
As you can tell from his work above, his drawings are extremely impressive and definitely not something we could do over here. We are priviledged to showcase Ken’s work on our site and you can see more of it at his own website TheGoodChild.com.
April 1st 2008 – May 31st 2008: Juan Ruiz-Velasco Peral

This term’s featured artist is Juan Ruiz-Velasco Peral. As he states on his web site, Peral’s art draws from his dual passions for painting and architecture, resulting in:
Human faces in organic strokes mixed with architectural abstractions. The main theme in my paintings is the perception of the city, the sexuality and the introspection of the human being: The body and the soul and its relationship with the exterior.
We thank Juan for his terrific contribution and you can see more of his work here.
November 23rd 2007 – March 31st 2008: Kija Lucas

Kija Lucas is our first Bay Area photographer to do the main banner on our site. Describing her own work as an examination of self and environment, we were very excited to see what she had in store for us – and she did not disappoint. To check out more of her stunning work head on over to KijaLucas.com.
September 10th – November 22nd 2007: Matt Leunig

Matt Leunig has been in the Bay Area for quite a while but, uniquely, spent most of his younger years abroad in Greece and Saudi Arabia. His art comes in many forms ranging from character design and comics to show fliers and CD covers. Going through his portfolio we were definitely awed by his client list and are thrilled to showcase his artwork. For more information or to check out his work head to ScrapedKnee.com
July 3rd – September 9th 2007: Lisa Romero

December 8th 2006 – January 30th 2007: Ryan Malmberg

Ryan approached us about doing the site and we were thrilled. Not being experts in flash (or artists) we were amazed with what he came up with! You can see more of his great work over at Finch Design.
October 23rd – December 7th 2006: Hannah Stouffer

During this period we were privileged to showcase the work of Hannah Stouffer. We knew and loved Hannah’s work even before we knew she was from the Bay Area and are thrilled to have worked with her. You can check out more of her amazing artwork over at Grand Array!
August 9th – October 22nd 2006: Scott Barry

Scott Barry is a supremely talented artist we met while interviewing Petracovich. You can see more of his work over at Birdstand.
