Video: Sonny & the Sunsets on Chasing the Moon

April 1, 2011

Best Chasing the Moon video to date? That’s my take. In the warm, intimate confines of the CtM studio, Sonny and his band offer up a sneak peak of Hit After Hit, out 4/12. If you weren’t sufficiently geeked about this album, you will be after seeing this video.

See the band at Amnesia this Saturday night.

Video: Ever Isles @ Chasing the Moon

Ever Isles @ Chasing The Moon from Scott McDowell on Vimeo.

It’s hard to stump music bloggers with new bands on their own turf, but Chasing the Moon’s latest podcast guest Ever Isles is one that none of us over at The Bay Bridged was familiar with (though we spotted the lovely vocalist Kacey Johansing sitting on the studio floor). With no pretense, the session is full of gorgeous vocal harmony and set in an indoor forest that seems to capture the magic of this live performance perfectly. Hear more Ever Isles recordings from fall of last year on their Bandcamp site.

Sea Of Bees @ Chasing The Moon from Scott McDowell on Vimeo.

Chasing the Moon is a video podcast series best known for capturing delicately precious moments between musicians, and the latest CTM session features Sacramento’s quickly rising Sea of Bees. Finding lead lady Jules cross-legged on the floor with a keyboard definitely sets this apart from most Sea of Bees performances; in addition, the set brings out the enchanting melodrama of the band’s remarkable 2010 debut, Songs for the Ravens (Crossbill Records).

Setlist:
1. “Gnomes”
2. “Strikefoot”
3. “It Won’t Be Long”

Birds & Batteries have a special relationship with Studio C, and we were so pleased to finally host them for Chasing The Moon. Mike Sempert is an incredible arranger, and brought in an all star string quartet that includes Anton and Lewis from Judgement Day. These guys are really incredible live, don’t miss their upcoming show at Bottom of the Hill on October 15th.

Tartufi is a very busy band. They co-organize awesome music festivals. They teach kids how to rock. They go on national tours. Still, they somehow find time to come into our studio and perform amazing jams like this. We hope you love it as much as we do.

Many of you already know how special a solo performance from Bart Davenport feels. When Bart told us he was bringing his band into the studio, we had no idea how lucky we were. Turns out – they’re amazing! Bart already has tons of style, and with the band, he steps it up so much more while still maintaining his intimate signature sound.

The California Honeydrops @ Chasing the Moon 06.26.10

This band is world class fresh! The California Honeydrops are the real deal: transforming any dull scene into a world class dance party. Lech Wierzynski leads a killer band that includes pianist Chris Burns, drummer Ben Malament, bass player Seth Ford-Young, and saxophonist Johnny Bones. Working on this episode was especially tough because none of us could stay seated during the editing/mixing.
