On January 31st local rockers MERCH released This Betrayal Will Be Our End on SF’s Sassafras Records. This marks the band’s second release and first on the North Beach label/distributor. The brainchild of Joe Medina, MERCH began some years ago as a chaotic and confusing project – evidenced by anything-goes live performances and a number of different members.

It was the collapse of a seven year relationship that spawned the focus and drive for Medina to pen This Betrayal, an album taking roughly two years to complete. The finished product plays like an audio version of the five stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance – centering MERCH’s purpose now more clearly than their earlier days.

Most tracks feature the central presence of hard-driving cello sounds, played by Sam Bass of Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade, lending a unique and appropriate sound to the album’s shattered relationship to mending heart theme.

Dirty Ghosts – “Ropes That Way”

Like dirty ghosts, Allyson Baker and Carson Binks, two Toronto expats, rose from the ashes of their old San Francisco-based band Parchman Farm and formed Dirty Ghosts in 2006, a stripped down form of gritty garage and psychedelia with drum loop-y programming by hip-hop recording artist and producer — and Baker’s husband — Aesop Rock.

After looking for a singer with no luck, Baker finally and reluctantly said “fuck it” and has since added vocalist to her resume. But when she lost Binks in 2011 to Oakland stoner metal band Saviours, she had to take matters further, by re-working and re-recording the sound and amassing a new line-up featuring Erin McDermott, Nick Andre, and Ben Tuttle. The sound is pretty funky and new wave rock-y with Speak & Spell-era Depeche Mode beats in the background. Baker’s powerful vocals are heartfelt and prominent, not awash in reverb as so many singers are these days — pretty ballsy for someone who never wanted to be a vocalist.

The band’s debut LP Metal Moon is out February 21 on Last Gang Records. With a West Coast tour and appearances at both Noise Pop and SXSW festivals, as well as a concerted effort to get new with their style and stay fresh, Dirty Ghosts are worth keeping your eye on in 2012.

Locals can see Dirty Ghosts play Noise Pop with Bare Wires, Chapter 24, and Chains of Love on February 23 at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall.

Night Genes’ CD release party: Wednesday, 2/8, with Tidelands and Yesway

San Francisco folk outfit Night Genes will be having their CD release party at Café Du Nord this Wednesday, February 8th, in celebration of their sophomore effort. Like the Blood follows their 2009 debut, Two Phantoms & A Holy Ghost. The band claims the new record “moves past mortality into rebirth, inquiring into the idea of evolution and progress from one generation to the next.” We think Boise native Eric Ingersoll’s baritone sounds a bit more Matt Berninger than Bill Callahan on the latest.

Night Genes – “Soaring Through the Chromosomes”

Two other local bands open: Tidelands and Yesway, the latter of which consists of Emily Ritz of Honeycomb/Dreams and Kasey Johansing.

Creepers (featuring members of White Cloud) have released a new HD video of the band performing the song “Black Moon” in a living room.

Compared to the band’s three-track EP released in July, “Black Moon” is a lighter, more nimble version of their earlier prog-metal style. Fitting the song’s bright sound, the video includes a projector coloring the room with washed out reds and greens.

Xray Eyeballs is the product of San Francisco expatriate O.J. San Felipe (also responsible for Golden Triangle) who is apparently also some kind of marketing genius. He has amassed a cult following in a short period of time from unhealthy and DIY rock-and-roll tactics, like getting obliterated and hanging from rafters at shows, or giving away a now coveted “ghost girl” t-shirt to every punk, skater, or goth he could find. Okay, maybe marketing isn’t quite the right word, but Felipe is certainly doing something right.

As for the music, Xray Eyeballs deliver dark and driving pop hooks that are occasionally surf-y with strong vocal harmonies and synth melodies to boot. Track three of their second LP Splendor Squalor (due to be released February 28 on Kanine Records) is available for download on Bandcamp, and, my-oh-my, is it catchy. Just one listen will not suffice if descriptions like “darkwave” or comparisons to Factory Records float your boat.

So far, no word of a west coast homecoming for San Felipe and his bandmates Liz Lohse, Sarah Baldwin, and Carly Rabalais. We will keep you posted.

Before new album, Sea of Bees gives away free live EP

Sea of Bees will release her sophomore album Orangefarben in May, but before she does, she is offering a free download of an exclusive live performance, now available on Soundcloud.

The Live at the Hangar 5.3.11 EP captures Sea of Bees, also known by her real name Jules, in an intimate live setting in Sacramento’s Hangar Studios, where she recorded her first album Songs for the Raven. The EP ends with a haunting rendition of the rarely performed “It Won’t Be Long,” which features Jules playing one of Neil Young’s old antique pump organs that she used on the studio version.

Sea of Bees will performing at Noise Pop on February 24th opening for Wye Oak at the Independent.

Ready for another Noise Pop party before the music kicks off February 16th? Yes! Yes you are. On Tuesday, February 7th Bottom of the Hill hosts an opening reception for the Noise Pop Photo Retrospective (6-9pm, Free, 21+), a visual look at the previous 19 years of one of the Bay’s most influential and important musical events.

Everything that helped mold the festival into what it is today – the musicians, the fans, the venues – will be featured, thanks to these photographers who caught it all: Eduardo Acorda, Marlu Aufmuth, Jeanne Ellenby, Peter Ellenby, Charlie Homo, Sheila Menezes, Paige Parsons, Mike Rosati, Julie Schuchard, Shoka Shafiee, Matt Seuferer and Deb Zeller.

The party will feature sets from local rockers Plastic Villains and Cool Ghouls, as well as Trumer Beer specials. Check out Plastic Villains’ first ever music video for the song “Fish Hook Esquire” off the album Whoever You Are Today.

Sacramento’s G. Green release new 7″ through 12XU, album ‘Crap Culture’ on Bandcamp

Sacramento garage punk group G. Green has released a new 7″ through 12XU with a couple tracks that did not make the cut for their 2012 debut LP Crap Culture, which is now digitally available through their Bandcamp page.

The 7″ includes “Funny Insurance,” as well as the b-side “Sounds Famous.”

G. Green’s core members are guitarist/vocalist Andrew Henderson and drummer/vocalist Liz Liles, however the group has a rotating cast of backing musicians to help fill out the lineup. Take a listen below to their new record Crap Culture:

Little Wings’ Made It Rain LP now out on vinyl, with limited-edition covers hand-painted by Kyle Field

Originally released on cassette as part of Gnome Life’s beautifully designed Echomancy series, Little Wings’ Made It Rain LP is now out on limited-edition vinyl, with only 300 copies in existence, in partnership with People in a Position to Know Recordings. Each record comes in a cover hand-painted by Kyle Field himself, whose artistic talents rival his songwriting abilities.

Recorded live in The Dream Yurt in Big Sur in the middle of a rain storm, Gnome Life describes it as “a chill-out tape of eclectic covers, Little Wings classics remixed, a little storytelling, and a fully new song to boot.”

Howlin Rain to celebrate new Rick Rubin-produced album at The Independent on 2/18/12

Howlin Rain is set to drop their new LP, The Russian Wilds, on Valentine’s Day, February 14. The album was produced by Rick Rubin. If you don’t know who Rick Rubin is, he’s the dude with the beard in the “99 Problems” video.

Howlin Rain will be tearing through The Independent on February 18 to celebrate the new release. The Soft White Sixties and Zodiac Death Valley also play.

Brick & Mortar’s free Wood Shoppe series begins 2/7/12

On Tuesday, February 7th, Brick & Mortar Music Hall presents the first installment of their Wood Shoppe series – a free, multi-band showcase that will occur on the first Tuesday of every month going forward.

Wet Illustrated, Magic Leaves, Seattle’s Noah Gundersen, and a Painted Palms DJ set round out the inaugural line up (8:30pm, free, 18+). According to Wet Illustrated’s Facebook page, at midnight the band will engage in a live, interactive game of Words With Friends. We recommend hoarding vowels and getting those triple word scores ready now.

One of San Francisco’s most promising singer-songwriters Garrett Pierce has released a new music video for the title track from his 2011 EP Everybody Breaks — his first effort on Narnack Records. The song will also appear on Garret’s forthcoming 2012 full-length City of Sand.

“Everybody Breaks” was directed by Sean Stout/TerroreyesTV. In the video, Pierce finds himself down and out in an SF bar before being approached by a man who hands him a treasure map that leads him into the woods.

Pierce will be part of Noise Pop this year, he is opening for Thao and John Vanderslice at Bottom of the Hill on February 23rd.

Yalls – “Settle Down”

The other day, a new song from Yalls premiered on Ears of the Beholder. “Settle Down” is the A-side of Yalls’ new 7-inch EP, Fantasy, which comes out on February 21st via Gold Robot Records (available for pre-order now).

The 7-inch will also be for sale at the Rickshaw Stop on February 22nd, when Yalls opens for Grimes and oOoOO during Noise Pop 2012.

Young the Giant’s Jacob Tilley discusses the band’s breakout 2011 and plans for new album

Three minutes on stage may have made the difference between emerging success and national attention, or a career as another relatively unknown alt-rock band for the members of Irvine’s Young the Giant.

Or, as guitarist Jacob Tilley recalls, it could have meant the end of the band itself, had Young the Giant not wowed national television viewers at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards with an electric performance of “My Body.”

“We were kind of getting to the point where we were trying to figure out if … we were going to do a second record or if it would be back to school for us,” said Tilley in a recent phone chat. “We got such a large fan base from three minutes on TV. It really changed the ball game for us.”

Propelled by that success, Young the Giant continue their tour in support of their eponymous debut album at two sold-out shows at The Fillmore Wednesday and Thursday. The quintet is now also working on a follow-up, which Tilley said should be finished next winter.

Tilley met vocalist Sameer Gadhia when his family moved to the States from England when he was 12. “He invited me to a soccer practice; I found out he played the guitar,” said Tilley, who went on to study at UC Santa Cruz. “Sameer was already friends with (bassist) Payam (Doostzadeh), and Payam played in a band when they were younger.”

Gadhia and Tilley started the earliest incarnation of the band, The Jakes, in 2004, along with a couple of other friends. Doostzadeh, guitarist Eric Cannata and drummer François Comtois joined within the next couple of years. The band members, now in their early 20s, were high school seniors at the time. Young the Giant might be a Southern California band, but only Doostzadeh is a native of the Golden State. Gadhia was born in Michigan, Cannata in New Jersey, and Comtois in Quebec, Canada.

After recording an EP, Shake My Hand, the band members put their education on hold to focus on music. That EP contained an early version of “Cough Syrup,” the buoyant second single on the debut album. The song gained traction on Los Angeles radio and earned the band opening spots for the likes of Minus the Bear. Debut album closer “Guns Out,” originally named “Guns of Normandy,” was also written around the same time, Tilley said.

In 2009 they changed their name, signed to Roadrunner Records, and retreated to an ocean-side house in Newport Beach to live together and record. Much of the album, released in January 2011, is influenced by the carefree lives of five teens.

“A lot of the songs were about summer and being young, having fun and not being too heavy,” Tilley said. “Nothing in our lives at the time had been too trying. We are lucky to have such a blessed life. We all went to university for two or three years. We had a chance to pursue it with the help of our parents.”

The majority of the songs on the album are smooth, melodic and punctuated by Gadhia’s distinct falsetto and vibrato. Songs like “Cough Syrup,” “12 Fingers” and “Strings” emote the bliss of swinging in a hammock and watching waves crash.

Then there’s “My Body,” the album’s one true rocker, and terrific workout song. Tilley said it was not written as a battle cry against a physical force, but rather a mental one. “It came from this kind of frustrated writing; we had hit a brick wall,” he said.

The musicians had a couple of drinks, climbed the stairs of their beach house and banged their first hit out in 15 minutes. Since the album’s release, “My Body” peaked at No. 5 4 on Billboard’s alternative chart, (and “Cough Syrup” is currently at #3 — ed.) Young the Giant played the main stage at Lollapalooza, had the aforementioned breakout performance on the Video Music Awards and toured with Incubus. The album also reached No. 42 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The award show exposed Young the Giant to a much larger audience. “All of a sudden (we were) in the international spotlight, in front of the industry’s biggest names,” Tilley said. “It has honestly changed the landscape of our career, and we’re very, very grateful for that.

Don’t expect the same breezy subject matter from Young the Giant next year, however. The experiences of touring nonstop, missing their families, and seeing firsthand that life is not a beach for everyone, has led to more depth in the band’s songwriting, Tilley said.

“We’re not at a point where we can just cover up our aggression,” he said. “We’re not as timid as we (were) on the first record. We have more to draw from this time.”

To celebrate its 20th year, Noise Pop will be operating a Pop-Up Shop out of the ground floor of The Bold Italic‘s HQ at 34 Page St. For three weeks leading up to the start of the Noise Pop Music Festival, the Pop-Up Shop will be featuring live music, drinks, food, and it’s safe to assume, general hilarity for all.

The launch event going down Thursday, Feb. 4 pretty well encapsulates what the pop up shop will entail: The Soft White Sixties and Tim Cohen’s Magic Trick playing sets, Britt Govea of folkYEAH! DJing, and Secret Seven Records displaying a selection of its releases by local bands from the 60s to the 80s. Not enough for ya? There will be chicken and waffles, BBQ, and whiskey. And bring an old but comfy shirt, because San Franpsycho will be screen printing on site. And that’s not all — so if you’re still not convinced this is the spot to be, I give up. Cloud Nothings play Bottom of the Hill 3/3/12, in support of new record ‘Attack on Memory’

Cloud Nothings‘ decidedly distinct follow-up to last year’s eponymous debut, Attack on Memory, dropped earlier this week via Carpark, and has already received glowing reviews from Pitchfork and the like.

In support of the new Albini-produced record, the band has announced a lengthy list of country-wide tour dates, which includes a sojourn at Bottom of the Hill on Saturday, March 3rd. HOTTUB to headline San Francisco Yellow Bike Project’s Upcycle Ball

The San Francisco Yellow Bike Project is throwing a party this Saturday at the Rickshaw Stop (8pm, $15-25). Actually, they’re throwing a Fundraiser, Parts Drive, and Dance Party. And when they say dance party, they mean it, because they went and got Oakland’s HOTTUB to headline the thing.

If you don’t go for the dance party, go for the fundraiser and parts drive. SFYBP is a “nonprofit, volunteer-powered community bike shop” and the Upcycle Ball is their launch party. You can get in for the low, low price of one complete bike (no bike will be turned away for not actually being functional). Or you can pay the $15-$25 sliding scale if all you’ve got is a bunch of spare parts — but they’ll take those spare parts too. Every bit counts.

It’s all going down on February 4 at the Rickshaw Stop. Maus Haus is doing a “DJ/video” set, and DJ Deep and Mr. Pillz are also playing. Show flyer after the jump.

Live This Month: February 2012 (Podcast #270)

In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. The twentieth installment of the Noise Pop Music Festival takes over a wide variety of local venues later this month — and we’ll be covering many of those shows — but there are also plenty of pre-NP events worth checking out. Locally, two bands are seeing the release of records for which it feels like we’ve been waiting forever: the debut LP from ultra-catchy punks Terry Malts, and the latest Rick Rubin-produced effort from Howlin Rain.

New York seven-piece band Ava Luna (“Wrenning Day”) is currently touring with Twin Sister. On February 4th, they’ll both be performing at the Great American Music Hall.

The Situation EP is the first release from local band Future Twin (“Yuka”). The group’s EP release show is an exciting one that also features Twin Steps, Exray’s and Death Cheetah all at the Hemlock Tavern on February 2nd.

Eleanor Friedberger (“My Mistakes”) is one-half of The Fiery Furnaces, but her solo record, Last Summer, is probably her best work yet. Friedberger and band come to The Independent on February 4th. Dominant Legs supports.

Sea Lions (“Grown Up”), from Oxnard, released the delightful jangle-pop collection Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sea Lions But Were Afraid To Ask last year. The quintet performs at Cafe Du Nord on February 3rd with Jeremy Jay and Tremor Low.

Laura Gibson‘s (“La Grande”) new album, La Grande, was inspired by the Oregon town that shares the record’s name. The folk performer and Breathe Owl Breathe will appear at Bottom of the Hill on February 6th.

Visions is the buzzed-about new album from Montreal’s Claire Boucher, also known as Grimes (“Genesis”). She’s co-headlining a sold-out Noise Pop show at the Rickshaw Stop on February 22nd.

Experimental electronic pop artist Matthew Dear (“Headcage”) will be performing a live set at Public Works as part of Noise Pop. Maus Haus, Exray’s, and Tropical Popsicle appear alongside Dear at the February 24th show.

Skygreen Leopards’ Donovan Quinn (“Shadow on the Stone”) recorded and produced Honky Tonk Medusa, which comes out on February 14th. Quinn will be at the Hemlock Tavern on February 19th, with supporting acts to be announced.

Los Campesinos! (“By Your Hand”) is a Welsh indie pop band. Hello Sadness, the act’s fourth album, came out late last year, and the group will be performing with Parenthetical Girls at the Great American Music Hall on February 10th.

Shawn Foree leads Digital Leather (“Young Doctors in Love”), a band championed by the late Jay Reatard. On February 11th, Digital Leather will be at Oakland’s 1-2-3-4 Go! Records, joined by Blasted Canyons and Glitz.

Terry Malts (“Nauseous”) are one of our favorite local bands, so we’re really looking forward to the group’s first LP, Killing Time. The band’s record release show is February 17th at the Hemlock Tavern with Airfix Kits and Cocktails.

The Russian Wilds is the long-awaited new album from SF’s Howlin Rain (“Phantom in the Valley”). The band is touring the country over the next few months, with a hometown stop at The Independent on February 18th.

We are pleased to showcase the work of Peter Max Lawrence as the new banner artist for our site. This is the first time we’ve had sketch art as a banner and frankly, we think it’s pretty good. Peter lives and works in San Francisco and is preparing for a major collaborative exhibition “AT WAR” with Troung Tran at SOMArts February 3rd, 6pm – 9pm.

Peter Max Lawrence is a maker of things. Born in Topeka; adopted soon there after and raised in Kansas City, Kansas. Over the course of his life, he has created a large and diverse body of work, exploring a wide variety of approaches, media and themes. Lawrence’s visual art, performances and videos have been presented internationally in venues ranging from basement bathrooms to major museums. Among his recent works of note are QUEER in KANSAS, Warholics and the experimental short de Young which was created while working as an artist-in-residence at the museum and later was featured on KQED’s Truly California. He has also directed music videos for Carletta Sue Kay, Krystle Warren and troops. Currently he is the curator for The One and Art Thieves as well as developing various collaborations with other musicians, artists and writers.

New Oakland-based label Guitars & Bongos – first release engineered by Greg Ashley

If you see a lot of live music in the Bay Area you certainly have encountered Eran Yarkon. Eran is from Israel but moved here in 1999. The Bay Area live music scene has no fan more dedicated. The guy has his finger on the pulse so to speak. Eran turned me on to Monotonix (from Tel Aviv) and their performances at Treasure Island 2010 and the Rickshaw in January 2011 were truly legendary. Eran is a laid back, friendly guy that seems to know everyone. It should be no surprise (except to himself perhaps) that he recently created his own record label – Guitars & Bongos.

Now that is a record cover! And as it suggests this is no regular record.

Guitars & Bongos’ first release, Love Police, from Charlie Megira & The Modern Dance Club was recorded in Jaffa, Israel, but the mastering was done right here in Oakland with none other than local hero Greg Ashley. Jaffe, an ancient city near Tel Aviv, sits on the Mediterranean Sea which may explain some of the serious Link Wray surf rock. But don’t hang too loose, the next song jumps to face-melting, screamy grunge. The guitar work is exceptional. The double LP comes with a free digital download and is available from the Guitars & Bongos website. The 31 songs cover a lot of ground to say the least. There is something for everyone (if you like Joy Division, Mermen, Dinosaur Jr., or the Modern Lovers!). The band has not yet played in the US but with a little luck we will have them here soon, and buying the record could help cover the cost of airfare.

The Midnight Snackers release ‘Sudden Death’ EP recorded in 72 hours

Over one weekend this past summer San Francisco garage group Midnight Snackers locked themselves into the studio, and just 72 hours or so later, came out with their second EP Sudden Death.

The paradoxical concept of wanting to spark total creative freedom through implementing strict constraints lead the band to create the album in a short span of time. Their mission was to avoid the post-editing process and come out with something organic and unadulterated.

In a press release for the new record, the band’s singer Dylan Haas describes what his thoughts were going into recording:

Really, I just wanted to see what kind of music we would make if we were completely strung out on sleeplessness and pharmaceuticals, like the way people lose their shit when they’re stuck in a car together for 12 hours.

Sudden Death is a solid release showing the diversity the Midnight Snackers brings to a saturated Bay Area garage market. The album is available for download on the group’s Bandcamp.

Last Friday, friends gathered at Amnesia for a rare performance from Sacramento’s husband-and-wife duo Two Sheds, who pulled together a full band including Sea of Bees guitarist/vocalist Amber and Chris Larsen, a Sacramento musician (founder of Buildings Breeding), who successfully met his fundraising goal to release his first solo recording under the moniker Flowerss.

Two Sheds opened for local pysch-folk band Sands, who invited Caitlyn Gutenberger of Two Sheds up on stage for a number.

Review & Photos: Kids on a Crime Spree, Bad Bibles, Adios Amigo @ The Hemlock 1/27/12

The stage at last Friday night’s show at the Hemlock hosted an eclectic motley crew of understated indie crooners, confrontational post punk performers, and fuzzed-out pop embraces.

The night began with Adios Amigo, which features Johnny Major from another Spanish-named band, Il Gato. Their music is more low-key than in your face, with subtle crescendos and washed out three-part vocal harmonies. It’s the perfect music for the end of a day at the beach, when the late afternoon sun pales everything to a light golden hue. If that is your thing, their new album is available for a free download here.

The next band to perform, Bad Bibles, was quite the opposite. Sticking to seasonal references here, they were more reminiscent of a harsh winter on the Eastern Bloc – dark, grey, cold. More derivative of Interpol than Interpol’s derivatives, I honestly couldn’t differentiate one song from the next. My opinions aside, the sound was polished and they did their thing well.

The evening took a particularly weird turn, though, when after the third or fourth song, the lead singer got confrontational with the audience: “let’s talk.” Uh-oh, here we go. “Is the music too loud? Because there’s all this space here in the front,” pointing to the void at the foot of the stage. In case you are wondering, the volume was not loud at all.

He went on and on about it for a minute or so while a few people awkwardly shuffled up closer to the stage. The rest of us left. I was beginning to wish I had gone to Serra Bowl.

Luckily, the evening was redeemed by Kids on a Crime Spree, the new band – and best yet – of Mario Hernandez from Ciao Bella and From Bubblegum to Sky. Their live sets have a certain fuzz induced brain crunching effect that can’t quite be translated on a recording. Expertly crafted pop songs accompanied by a lo-fi wall of sound shows that you don’t need more than a couple of guitars and simple, punchy drumming to make this girl happy.

Behold, the latest video from Future Twin for “Summer Song.” The video is one continuous shot of Jean Yaste, Future Twin’s singer/guitarist/bandleader, playing an acoustic version of a song called “Summer Song” in a very San Francisco-lookin’ backyard. The video was shot out in the wild by Adam Shaening-Pokrasso of 12 Frames Per Second and Heidy Petty of Yours Truly.

If you enjoy the video, make sure to catch them live for their EP release party at the Hemlock this Thursday with Exray’s and Death Cheetah (9pm, $6). The Situation EP is Future Twin’s first studio album, and was produced by Jon Bernson of Exray’s. Oakland rockers B. Hamilton launch Kickstarter campaign

Originally self-released in November of 2011 as a free download, Oakland rock-and-rollers B. Hamilton are now looking to release their full-length Everything I Own Is Broken on vinyl through Kickstarter. Check out the campaign here.

With 5 days remaining, the band is about $650 short of their $2000 goal. Since pledges of $15 or more receive a copy of the vinyl, it’s a win-win situation — buyers get an awesome local rock record for $15 and B. Hamilton earn a well-deserved (albeit probably small) paycheck for their efforts. Bonus points: Anyone who donates a dollar or more will have their name pressed on the record.

According to the band, pledges over $100 will get a copy of the record “plus we’ll take you out for a night on the town, give you whatever merchandise we make in the near future, and give you a bunch of synthetic hair.”

Snob Theater at SF Sketchfest, January 31, 2012

Local music-and-comedy show Snob Theater is hosting a night of laughs on January 31st at the Eureka Theater for this year’s SF Sketchfest. Produced and hosted by San Francisco comedian Shawn Robbins, Snob Theater places indie rock bands and comedians onstage together with intriguing results.

San Francisco’s own indie rock group Still Flyin’ are the musical guest (fun fact: two of the band’s songs were recently played on The Office “Pool Party” episode). Featured comedians include Chris Fairbanks (Fuel.TV, Comedy Central), Sheng Wang (Comedy Central), and Coree Spencer (Comedian on Comedian interviews). Tickets are $15, pre-order here.

Photographer Peter Ellenby Debuts New Exhibition at Noise Pop 2012: 15 Years of Death Cab for Cutie and John Vanderslice, in Photos

Photographer Peter Ellenby has been taking portraits of Death Cab for Cutie and John Vanderslice for over 15 years. Now as part of Noise Pop’s 20th Anniversary, Ellenby’s photo exhibit DC/VJ will be on display, featuring portraits depicting the progression of the musicians’ celebrated careers as well as Ellenby’s own stylistic progression.

DC/JV will be housed at sponsor San Franpsycho’s offices located at 1314 Grant (between Vallejo and Green). The opening reception will be on Thursday, February 2nd from 5–9pm with an additional festival reception Thursday, February 23rd from 5–7pm.

While discussing the exhibit and the festival, which he has photographed the past 18 years and counting, Ellenby stated:

The Noise Pop Festival is very near and dear to me and I wanted this show to represent what I see are the best parts of the Festival. . . The fact that a bond also exists between Death Cab and John is fantastic as well. JV is like the glue that holds SF’s music scene together and Death Cab represent what a great stage Noise Pop has been for bands getting a shot during the Festival.

John Vanderslice will be playing Noise Pop this year, co-headlining Bottom of the Hill with Thao Nguyen on February 23rd.

Review & Photos: Nobunny, Bongwater & Black Swans, 1/24/12 – 1/25/12

No, this photo is not from last week’s show at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records. It was all ages after all and Nobunny kept his clothes on. The room was completely packed and no one was safe from the moshing, flying jackets and projectile vomit. The short set ripped through much of the Nobunny catalog including the signature “Boneyard” and “I am a Girlfriend”. The grande finale was a fueled up version of Weird Al Yankovic’s “Eat It”. Out front the kids were cussin’ and slappin’ each other around. Full on all ages experience. The photo is from SXSW ’09 at the oldest bar in Austin, the incredible Scoot Inn. I think I got my buddy Chuck all signed up to join me in Texas this coming March; hard to believe it is nearly February.

Down the street at the Stork Club, Columbus Ohio’s Black Swans helped us digest the scene we left behind. I got some whiskey into Chuck and he eloquently compared the band to Lou Reed singing Leonard Cohen. The Black Swans continue to experiment with instrumentation since their last SF show at the Rite Spot. This band included Omnichord! I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these. It’s like an electric autoharp I guess; another forgotten treasure from the early 80s. Soon all the kids will be using them. Lead Swan Jerry is seriously considering a move to the Bay Area and we would be so lucky to have him. The guy already seems to know the best venues…

After a bit of sleep the party moved to Yoshi’s in Oakland where Ann Magnuson brought her latest show: The Drawing Room Apocolypse. Backed by only piano and drums, Ms. Magnuson managed to turn Yoshi’s into some sort of NYC performance art space from 1985. She began the show in an elaborate gold dress, but quickly stripped down to fishnets and a corset. From a coat rack she gradually pulled various costumes. The show celebrated the end of the world that is coming in 10 months (as the Mayan calendar predicts). Bowie’s “5 Years” therefore was transformed into “10 months” with the crowd singing the chorus. There were songs from throughout her career including a Bongwater medley! Plus songs by Bessie Smith, The Doors and Janis Joplin. She spoke brilliantly about everything from the occupy movement to HIV and how fucking stupid we are to be complaining about Obama given the freakishly frightening alternatives. No photos I’m afraid but check out this ridiculous video of her with Bongwater and special guests Bob Weir and Screaming Jay Hawkins!!

Bass clarinet duo Squonk tour the Bay Area

The overlords of Bay Area indie rock have heard your prayers and have granted show-goers a change of pace this weekend, just in time for soothing the lingering post-New Year’s, post-49ers hangover that will be known forever as January 2012. It will be like a B vitamin with a coconut water chaser for your ears and soul.

Squonk is Jeff Anderle and Jonathan Russel — two dudes with bass clarinets and a love of classical composition, klezmer, and heavy metal, in no particular order. While Russel has been pursuing his PhD at Princeton, Anderle performs with the Magik*Magik Orchestra, San Francisco’s indie orchestra that has helped tart up rock recordings for John Vanderslice, The Dodos, and many others.

Suqonk made their first stop last night in San Francisco where they shared the stage with experimental percussion and guitar duo, The Living Earth Show. They head to Berkeley for a Saturday performance with Amy X Neuberg, and on Sunday will be in Palo Alto for a show with Areon Flutes.

For all three performances, the duo will play compositions of their own, as well as those written by artists like Amit Gilutz, and Michael Sempert of the band Birds and Batteries, as well as a surprise pop cover.

Half-handed Cloud releases 4.5 minute EP on new split 7″

Half-handed Cloud — the solo project of John Ringhofer, who also plays trombone in Sufjan Stevens’ Illinoisemakers — has to be one of the only bands out there right now that is capable of releasing a 5-song EP on a split 7-inch. Those five songs comprise the Blood Brothers EP and in total clock in at only 4.5 minutes, so that actually leaves enough time for the Nordic band I Was A King to supply the chipper, synthy pop number you can stream below, plus a Half-handed Cloud cover. (Half-handed Cloud returns the favor by including an I Was A King cover on the EP.)

According to the Oslo, Norway-based record label Splendour, only 60 or so physical copies remain of the 7-inch, and there will be no digital release. So if H-hC is your jam, you better hurry up and snag a copy.

San Francisco singer-songwriter Bhi Bhiman has released a new stop-motion animated music video for his song “Time Heals” from his forthcoming album BHIMAN out January 24th on BooCoo Music (the album is streaming on Spinner this week). The video, directed by Liam Hurley and Sam Kassirer, uses photographs of Bhiman in 662 different facial expressions and 4,000 shots of animation. We were drawn to the theme of time in this song, with a concept of ‘moving collage’ in mind,” Hurley and Kassirer said. “The discrete sections and tempo changes lent an air of theatricality, over which Bhi’s powerful voice serves to unite all the ‘acts.’ Although newspapers traditionally serve to mark a specific point in history, in this case they were used to emphasize the viewers sense of timelessness, something Bhi’s music does so well.

Bhiman is currently in the middle of a small U.S tour with Martin Sexton, but will play a record release party at Bottom of the Hill on February 18th with Vandella.

Song Premiere: Birdmonster – “Living” (plus ticket giveaway!)

Birdmonster said it best in a recent email explaining their whereabouts: “My, my. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? We’re sorry. We missed you too. We were just waiting for that special time between the Harold Camping-sponsored apocalypse and the Mayan-flavored cataclysm and that time is now.”

It’s true that Birdmonster activity has slowed a bit since 2006′s No Midnight, 2008′s From the Mountain to the Sea, and 2009′s Blood Memory (especially given the recent solo adventures of Sonny Pete). However, a new single from Birdmonster, “Living”, is available now: upbeat, rhythmic indie rock, with an underlying pulse of folk that brings us back to the heart of the band.
