Video Premiere: The Mallard – “Mansion” (Directed by Hannah Lew)
April 27, 2012

Below, we’re excited to the premiere of the new video from SF’s The Mallard. “Mansion” comes from Yes on Blood, the band’s recent Castle Face full length, and the video was directed by Hannah Lew (Grass Widow). The clip is another 16mm winner from Lew, who has also done recent videos for Hunx, Shannon and the Clams, Rat Columns and others. As you’ll see, “Mansion” finds The Mallard hanging out and playing on Mare Island, and the song’s insistent melody is visually accented by broken glass, broken eggs, and broken windows. It makes me want to spin Yes on Blood and visit the island, so win-win, right?
The Mallard have quite a busy schedule coming up, with half a dozen local dates over the next few months, and a ton of touring in July and August. The band’s also going to be sharing a split 7” with Thee Oh Sees as part of the LAMC Series, although there’s no set date for that release at present. More Mallard music and tour dates below.

Tonight: Screaming Females play Bottom of the Hill in support of Albini-recorded ‘Ugly’ LP
April 24, 2012

With seven years as a band and over 700 live performances under their belt, New Brunswick’s Screaming Females show no signs of slowing down. The band released their fifth (and first Albini-recorded) LP Ugly this month on Don Giovanni Records, and the record is already being heralded as one of the best albums of the year: fourteen tracks billed as the “perfect combination of raw energy and honed musicianship,” and definitely their tightest and strongest record yet.
Screaming Females’ live show is fire; Marissa Paternoster shreds and wails vibrato into the mic, while King Mike’s fast and melodic bass riffs allow the 5’1” guitarist and vocalist to solo in and out of songs, and it’s all held together by Jarrett Dougherty’s tight drumming. At Bottom of the Hill tonight, Tthey will be sharing the stage with Burger Record’s Audacity (touring with Ty Segall in July) and the powerful Berkeley two-piece Street Eaters.

Song Premiere: Birds & Batteries – “Living Through Pictures”
April 18, 2012

This morning on The Bay Bridged, we debut “Living Through Pictures” — one of five danceable pop songs that mark the return of Birds & Batteries. They celebrate the release of their newest EP, the somewhat dark and synth-heavy Unfold, with a show at Bottom of the Hill Saturday. The bill stays local with Mwahaha and oWNERSHIP (8:30, $12, tickets). Those who attend the show will not only receive a download code to the digital EP, they’ll see “Living Through Pictures” performed live for the very first time.
Here’s a little info about the EP:
Unfold is the new EP by Birds & Batteries, four energetic yet heavy tracks and one slow-mo reprise fueled by the complexities of love and conflict in a digital age. Songwriter Mike Sempert wields his uncanny ability to meld micro and the macro, the personal and the cosmic in this latest invention. The raw turmoil of the Unfold EP is like the storm before the calm, which will give way to the distilled clarity of Stray Light, B&B’s upcoming full-length, due summer of 2012.
Check the Birds & Batteries website for more upcoming shows, including a stop in Davis later this month, and a performance at California Academy of Science’s Nightlife on May 10. [More...]
