Audio Visual is a 10 part series exploring the fashion choices of local musicians. The Bay Area music scene is nothing if not diverse and this noncomformity is as evident in clothing as it is in music. With this in mind, Audio Visual strives to analyze the connection between the sartorial choices of musicians and their work.
Part of a burgeoning electro-indie pop wave, Birds & Batteries have more than left their mark on the San Francisco scene. Their particular brand of sophisticated, beautifully structured and incredibly hooky pop recalls private eyes, crooks and villians and retro-futuristic film. In the third installment of Audio Visual, we speak to Jill Heinke about her approach to dressing on and off the stage. Birds & Batteries will be at the Triple Crown on June 8th (9:00 pm).

My kind patrons at The Bay Bridged indulged my request to wander just a step off the beaten path and up to North Beach to catch up with The Blank Tapes, an alt-country rock band whose new album Home Away From Home has been lodged at the top of my personal playlist.
It is a balmy late spring evening of the sort that tourists usually only dream of seeing on this fabled corner. I’ve walked past Grant and Green saloon hundreds of times without stopping in. Chances are you have, too. I expected to see a few regulars in their Niners jerseys, and anywhere from a smattering to a quorum of hipsters in the know. Instead, the place is packed with Marina youth and a gang of young fans down from Chico to see openers The Amblers. The temperature and air quality are at sauna levels already as they ease into their set.
My colleague and I trade relieved glances. The Amblers have their own country-tinged groove, and it’s working. Compositions are sophisticated and arrangements are tight. All three front liners pitch in on vocals, and make their raw singing skills work for them. Each member has mastered their chops, and yet they retain a loose, puppyish garage energy suggestive of early Dr. Dog. Byron the bassist keeps up a lively banter, and sings the last song with his mom.

ME’DI.ATE’s Soundwave Festival is San Francisco’s premier experiential arts festival held every two years over the span of two months over the summer. Bringing together sound purveyors from across the sonic spectrum (from sound art to experimental to classical to popular music), Soundwave presents innovative performances and activities that challenge the way audiences see and hear sound and music.
This year’s festival will feature over 75 artists in 35 performances, in partnership with institutions/organizations such as the de Young, Yerba Buena Gardens, and Rock the Bike (bike-powered music stage!). Some of the more indie-style artists performing include The Drift, Lazarus, Danny Paul Grody, Odessa Chen, Barn Owl, and more.
Sunday’s event will be a retreat to the wilderness out at Battery Townsley in the Marin Headlands, to which Soundwave will be offering bus service from San Francisco. Check out the rest of the festival’s like-minded events plus ticket information on the Soundwave 2010 website.

This Saturday night, our friends The Dont’s celebrate the release of their new album, Those Delicate Chemicals, at Bottom of the Hill (9:30pm, $12, 21+). The East Bay Express calls the record, “a reminder that indie didn’t always sound like it was produced via marketing focus groups. It’s a janglier, organic sound than most of what’s out there right now, and it feels a lot less calculated and a lot more authentic.”
Over at the Rickshaw Stop tomorrow night (8pm, $15), The Hot Toddies will be celebrating the release of their second full length, Get Your Heart On. Take a listen to one new song below, and more at the band’s MySpace page.
