New, Improved, LIVE: Studio Session with Yoni Wolf (of WHY?)

TheBayBridged.com and New, Improved Recording are proud to present the third installment of New, Improved, LIVE, our ongoing monthly series of live studio sessions with top indie bands, recorded at the New, Improved Recording studio in Oakland, California. This month’s session features Yoni Wolf of WHY? delivering exclusive solo vocal-and-piano renditions of songs from the band’s upcoming album as well as a terrific Pavement cover.

There’s a certain full circle feeling to inviting Yoni into the studio to perform solo, since WHY? began as a solo project before it evolved into the full band acclaimed for Elephant Eyelash and Alopecia. On September 22nd, WHY? returns with Eskimo Snow, recorded at the same time as Alopecia, but showcasing a darker side to the group’s sound. Earlier this year, as the band prepared for the new album’s release, Yoni performed some solo shows that showcased the vulnerable, moving core that underlies his band’s layered arrangements.

We’re pleased to provide the only studio recording you’re going to hear of these solo interpretations, including two songs from Eskimo Snow, one from Alopecia, and a cover of Pavement’s “Shoot the Singer (1 Sick Verse)” (from 1992′s Watery, Domestic EP).

For even more, check out photos from the session and an interview with Yoni Wolf at our New, Improved, LIVE page! Videos from the session, courtesy of Pandora, will be published later this month!

We’d like to thank Yoni for the excellent session. WHY? will be performing at Great American Music Hall on Saturday, October 17th, with Mount Eerie, Au, and Serengeti & Polyphonic.

We’ve got plenty of great performances scheduled to come in future months, which will all be published at thebaybridged.com/new-improved-live/ on a monthly basis. Acclaimed performers and a top notch studio means great free music that redefines the studio experience: New, Improved, LIVE.

Dear & Yonder

This weekend the city celebrates Tiffany Campbell and Andria Lessler’s latest film Dear & Yonder, which follows female riders as they conquer some of the most beautiful wet landscapes on earth — including Indonesia, Mexico and sessions out on San Francisco’s prized Ocean Beach. For its release, Dear & Yonder is touring the east and west coasts with plenty of stops in CA.

The local screening will be at sundown Saturday at Potrero del Sol Park (25th and Utah), but is starting off with live music: the downtempo tenebrous rock of Black Bow, Thee Oh Sees loud and proud, and selected candidates from Bay Area Girls Rock Camp. The show will be preceded by an art show benefit the night before at Mollusk Surfshop on 46th & Irving (7pm). More tourdates and information can be found at the film’s website.

The Dry Spells release debut: Too Soon For Flowers

Dry Spells - Jai Carillo

The Dry Spells, with their layered electric and acoustic instrumentation, are one of the Bay Area’s many contributions to the exploding psych-folk scene.  Tracks like “Batwood” begin with plenty of rhythm and structure and devolve into a flurry of guitar riffs and violin.   Other songs feature solid backbone and somber tambourine. Can tambourine be somber? This one is – under searing guitar melodies.

The Dry Spells – “Lost Daughter”

As with all self-respecting indie/folk/psych/rock/acoustic/electric/hybrid outfits, The Dry Spells feature one member with a biblical name, one beard and an affinity for all things analog. The band’s debut album Too Soon for Flowers, was recorded on tape at Louder Studios in San Francisco by rock impresario Tim Green.

The album comes out August 11th on Antenna Farm Records and The Dry Spells will be celebrating its release this Thursday at Café du Nord.  Local singer-songwriters Kelley Stoltz and Jessica Pratt will be joining them. Additionally, a super-secret uber-special guest will also be taking the stage.
