Sleepy Sun – “New Age”
SF’s Sleepy Sun–fresh off a European tour including stops at the Primavera and All Tomorrow’s Parties festivals–is back in the US and gearing up for the release of their debut album Embrace on ATP Recordings on June 16th. The record, which mixes psych rock freakouts, folky intimacy and otherworldy sounds, is simply one of the most exciting releases of the year and very much worth checking out.

Local artist Kid Mud, whom you might remember as the solo electronic/indie artist with two EPs out on New and Used Records, will release his first full-length, Now They Shut us Down on June 16. The following day he will celebrate and introduce the album to an audience at El Rio (8:30pm, $5), performing as part of Vive le Rock, an annual evening of local music and film. Gosta Berling and Skeletal System round out the bill, and two short films by Nick Gamino will serve as intermission between the live music.

Kid Mud – “Federated”
“Federated” is a particularly jumpy track off the album, which progresses in and out of Duncan’s pensive and astronomical hums. While in the past Duncan recorded on his own, Now They Shut Us Down is a blend of home recording and studio time at Mountain Ghost Studios (Jamestown, CA), and with invitation to collaborators, including his own sister. Another of the noteworthy tracks, “909 Garden,” features vocals from Jim Ruiz; the faint repetition of acoustic guitar under the chorus rounds of this duet reminisces the ambient side of Grandaddy’s catalog.

Go See Manicato: This Saturday at Du Nord

Go see Israel Matos and his band Manicato at Cafe Du Nord this Saturday, June 13th. It’s a mystery how their music is yet undiscovered to so many San Francisquegnos, especially considering they’ve been around since ’04. [Where is the blasted tilde on this putamadre of a cpu, Steve?] I caught up with Israel a couple weeks ago in the Mission and this is what he had to say by an obligatory 10-question shakedown. It must be stated however that this interview provides really only a much abbreviated paraphrase, which will be expanded upon soon but in the meantime have this nugget and then like I said like thrice go check out the show.
CD: You grew up inside your music. Talk a little about that?
IM: My father is a renowned salsero, or sonero, and from the age of eight I was playing percussion as he sang, call and response [coro y pregon]. There were always instruments around the house. Music was part of my everyday life.
CD: Before Manicato and the timba, you yourself sang traditional salsa for six years. I know the jury’s still out on this one, but I have to put you on the spot here: where did salsa originate, what region?
IM: Ooh, that’s a dangerous question. See the Caribbean. You can [smiles, sheeshes through his teeth] quote me on that.
CD: Your band plays timba, a sub-category of salsa?
IM: Yes, but its evolution has definitely been independent of salsa, more wide-ranging melody lines, it’s funkier, groovier. See Puerto Rico.
CD: You maintain a great sense of confidence about this band, an undeniable positivity about you, but your stage presence is placid. How’s that?
IM: I’ve sung in rock and roll bands, too, and done the whole go-crazy-on-stage thing. It’s never been me. Manicato is my baby, and so I want to do what feels natural for me. The flashiest thing I do is spin my cowbell. [More...]

The Dry Spells – “Batwood”
Antenna Farm Records has announced an August 11th release date for Too Soon For Flowers, the debut full length from San Francisco’s The Dry Spells. The folk-rock band formed at Bard College, and became inspired to write their first song about a local tragedy where a nine-year-old girl was accidentally killed by a hunter while she was out collecting leaves. After graduating, the band moved to San Francisco and reconnected with Bard alumnus Ezra Feinberg, joining his band Citay.

Part of my brain shot out my ear – and I LOVED it: etd.POP 12

If you’re not familiar with it, etd.POP, short for Electronic Disco Popsicle, is THE electronic show for the Bay Area. This year’s lineup read like a who’s who of the current scene. N.A.S.A, Felix Cartal, Flosstradamus, L.A. Riots, Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, my favorite set of the night Deadmau5, and a shit ton of others.
True to Bay Area form this was not just a show, this was a rave. No longer confined to the warehouses of SOMA, the artists were let loose down at Cow Palace. The setup was the sensory overload one would expect from an event this size: huge screens with constantly evolving visualizations, an insane light show, and a revolving main stage (see above, Deadmau5 is performing on it) made this night unforgettable.
Skills laid out the venue with 4 different areas, so I spent most of the early evening bouncing around hearing as much as I could, and dancing like you’ve never seen a white boy dance before (pretty sure I burned upwards of 5 million calories in the course of several hours).
As I’m lucky enough to have caught several of the DJs at previous shows, I made sure to see N.A.S.A., who absolutely killed it. They’ve got that delicate balance between dropping heavy beats and keeping it still somewhat poppy and digestibly. If you’ve listened to RAC at all, N.A.S.A. is very similar but with a bit more of a steady groove.

Grand Lake – “She’s a Hater”
This week’s featured podcast band Grand Lake headlines a Deli SF-presented show this Thursday night at the El Rio that also features Beatbeat Whisper and The Heated. It’s been a mixed week for Grand Lake, with the theft of their van and stage piano being an obvious low, but the release of their excellent new Sandusky Sunset cassingle worth celebrating. You can hear the cassingle’s two songs in this week’s podcast and it will be available for purchase at Thursday’s show.
