Trainwreck Riders
Even though the heat wave’s ending today, Trainwreck Riders‘ latest new song is ideal for the next time temperatures rise and you don’t feel like moving too quickly. Coming soon after the first mp3 from their upcoming album The Perch, this one’s another winner with a vibe that’s wistful and melancholic.

How was your Record Store Day? From TBB Staff, with love

We at The Bay Bridged did a little Record Store Day celebrating over the weekend, whether that means stopping in to catch a performance or seeking out the one-day-only sales (we’re just as poor as all of you, folks!). Compiled below are our observations from events throughout the Bay Area.

Armadillo Music in Davis, 5pm:

Garrett Pierce - Armadillo Music, Davis

This independent record store has been providing Davis with local support and decent prices for decades, and it is no wonder that they were busy on Saturday — yet partly due to the yearly Picnic Day event thrown on UC Davis’ campus. Every Saturday they bring their used CD section out onto the sidewalk to boost sales and seduce the occasional passerby with an album priced too low to pass up (I won’t lie, I was tempted by Brandy’s first album, then saw some of my sell-backs in there and remembered I’m cutting back on clutter). For Record Store Day, the used section was knocked down to half off.

Our latest Monthly Mix episode of the weekly podcast features ten great Bay Area bands, including a lot of good stuff from new and recent releases. About all of the bands:

Still Flyin’ (“The Hott Chord Is Struck”) release their debut album today via the Ernest Jenning Record Co. The CD release show for Never Gonna Touch The Ground is May 9th at Cafe Du Nord, with Nodzzz supporting.

The second album from local songwriter Ayal Nistor’s My Second Surprise (“Bring the Sunshine”) is called Time to Move On, and it’s available now. My Second Surprise plays every Sunday night at the Edinburgh Castle.

Mythomania, the new album from Cryptacize (“Tail & Mane”), is terrific and it’s out today on Asthmatic Kitty. The band’s CD release party is April 24th at Cafe Du Nord with Papercuts and The Finches.

SF folk-rock band Bias Tape (“MMPP”) released their debut album A Part late last year. The band’s got two performances scheduled in May: at the Hotel Utah on the 19th and at the Swedish American Hall on the 21st.

Tri-record release show Friday: Papercuts, The Finches, Cryptacize

Papercuts - You Can Have What You Want

Tuesday marked the official release of Papercuts‘ newest concoction, You Can Have What You Want (Gnomonsong) — and next Friday a triple whammy record release show at Cafe du Nord is planned with Cryptacize (Oakland) and the Finches, coming back from a show hiatus.

Papercuts – “You Can Have What You Want”

So far, You Can Have What You Want has been nothing short of warmly praised (Rough Trade had great things to say about it, as well as samples of a few tracks). Circulating with the iTunes purchase is a remix of “Future Primitive” from The Go! Team, but the original version has been the jam since it was unveiled via MySpace in anticipation of the album. The first time I heard it was on Viva Radio, of all places, but undeniable was how addicting the song becomes after one listen. Jason Quever and his backing band pulled it off with grace at the Swedish during Noise Pop in February, joined by Alex Scally (Beach House), who’s also on the record.

After almost a year the Finches return, with a slightly freshened lineup: adding Gerry Saucedo and John Garmon. The release being celebrated is an EP, while Cryptacize presents us with their sophomore Asthmatic Kitty record, Mythomania. Building on their already delicately embellished art pop song, Cryptacize’s Mythomania continues to pace between eager beats and down-tempo serenades with slicing, almost surf rocky guitar riffs. The result is eargasmic and amusing, to say the least.

The Papercuts/Finches/Cryptacize CD release show will take place Friday April 24 at Cafe du Nord at 9:30pm with a $10 cover.

Dame Satan – “I’m On Fire” (Bruce Springsteen cover)

Dame Satan - Photo by: Katherine Levin
Presented exactly as it was received:

“In 1984, A pressed an ear to the front of a fat stereo speaker as Dad dropped a fresh wax copy of Born in the U.S.A. on the turntable. In 2003, A and Chopko drank beers in a vast San Francisco parking lot next to what was then Pacific Bell Park until they, with the E Street’s opening strains tumbling faintly through the air, could no longer stand missing out. A scalper rolled by with nose-bleed bargains and the dudes obliged the Boss. In October 2008, Dame Satan stuffed into a mom’s sedan for an East Coast tour. The car came with a tape deck and two cassettes, American Beauty by The Grateful Dead and Born in the U.S.A. They almost wore the latter out, as the radio anthems, exploding with the bandleader’s bottom-less charisma and the crystalline 80s production, burned into their brains.”

Dame Satan – “I’m On Fire” (Bruce Springsteen cover)

“Partially in homage, in February 2009, A (Andrew Simmons), Breezy (Brendan Sheehan), and Chopko (Michael Chopko) hunkered down in a friend’s San Leandro, CA living room to rip a cover of that album’s last song: “I’m on Fire”. Homeowner Ryan Henry engineered the sessions. A sang, played electric guitar, and shook a shaker. Chopko played electric bass, electric guitar, sang, and rattled percussion. Breezy played slide guitar, drums, cymbal swells, Space Echo vibes, and acoustic guitar. Breezy mixed. Louis Stephens polished the mix and mastered at Brown Desk Studio in Los Angeles, CA.”

After the jump, Dame Satan’s East Coast tour dates: [More...]
