The Bay Bridged Presents: Vetiver’s CD Release Party Tonight!

Amidst seemingly nonstop US and European touring, Vetiver returns to San Francisco in early April for a very special homecoming performance. It was a treat to see the band at the Bay Area Takeover at SXSW and we’re very happy to present the official CD release party for their latest album, Tight Knit, out now on Sub Pop Records. As many critics have noted, the new album is an incredibly moving work, full of memorable layered songs that sound great live. Advance tickets are highly recommended for this one!

Still Flyin’ – “The Hott Chord Is Struck”

Still Flyin’ – The Hott Chord Is Struck

San Francisco’s Still Flyin’ have been performing for about five years, but are only now releasing their first full length album Never Gonna Touch The Ground (out 4/21 on Ernest Jenning Record Co.). Led by Sean Rawls, the dozen-plus rotating member band’s rep is for a strong rock steady/reggae-based sound, but “The Hott Chord Is Struck” is unabashed pop and, in my opinion, an early contender for jam of the summer. Seriously, I want to hear this spreading good times from open windows, on car stereos, and boomboxes on park benches.

“Good Thing It’s a Ghost Town Around Here” is uber-catchy as well, with an appropriately monster-filled video:

The band’s currently on tour and will celebrate their CD release at Cafe Du Nord on May 9th with Nodzz.

Noise Pop opens web art gallery and store

Noise Pop‘s influence on the Bay Area music and arts continues to envelope the webosphere — they’ve just opened an online art gallery and webstore dubbed the Noise Pop Culture Club.

Currently there are two galleries up for viewing pleasure: one a collection of Lauren Dukoff’s photographs, with many of her Warhol-esque depictions of Devendra Banhart for sale in the webstore.  The second gallery gives those who missed the Sights of Sounds art exhibit at this year’s Noise Pop Festival a second chance: there’s a limited selection of the work shown at Park Life, from musicians Mark Mothersbaugh, Jesse Michaels of Operation Ivy and several others.  Alissa Anderson (Vetiver) took a nice snap of frontman Andy Cabic on the corner of 6th and Clement (shown above) going for $250.

This week’s podcast features Vetiver, a folk-rock band led by San Francisco’s Andy Cabic and one that likely needs little introduction to Bay Area indie music fans. After moving from North Carolina to SF following the dissolution of his band The Raymond Brake, Cabic found himself immersed in a community of forward-thinking musicians, eventually co-founding the band Tussle and creating a demo of solo recordings that found its way to Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, The Lilys). Over four acclaimed albums, Cabic and Monahan have developed a folk-rock sound balancing relatively understated melodies with gorgeous layered production. Cabic’s musical influences, some of whom he covered on 2008′s A Thing of the Past, are numerous and diverse, and critics have praised the band’s ability to transform well-worn classic folk and rock sounds into something both familiar and modern.

In February, Vetiver released its most prominent album to date, Tight Knit, on Sub Pop Records. As we’ve written at length elsewhere, the album manages to be both exciting and restrained, expanding the Vetiver sound into songs with strong pop and boogie leanings while delivering plenty of the layered folk-rock fans have come to expect and enjoy. Imminently listenable, it’s another strong addition to the band’s body of work that they’re supporting with a series of US and international tours. If you can see them live, we highly recommend you check them out.
