This week’s episode is presented by KQED Interactive.

This week’s featured band is Music for Animals, a San Francisco quartet mixing a fondness for classic rock-pop hooks with a stripped-down modern aesthetic. Very longtime listeners to the podcast will remember us first speaking with the group a few years ago, as part of an hour-long Playing in Fog-themed two-band interview, but with the release of a brand new EP titled If Looks Could Kill, we felt that it was high time to dedicate a full episode to Music for Animals. Like their self-titled album, Music for Animals’ latest work is full of catchy choruses and danceable songs, but it also sees them pushing in new directions, with some slower tempos and production choices that highlight the band’s nuanced songwriting.

Locally, the group is well known for being enthusiastic–and sometimes downright silly–performers who deliver a live show that’s incredibly fun and full of energy. Beneath that energy, though, there are sharp minds working on crafting exciting melodic songs from lean, minimalist parts. That careful layering pays off especially well on If Looks Could Kill, which represents the first time the guys worked with both an outside producer and at an outside recording studio. There’s a real passion for tight songs here, one that’s evident in our discussion with the band about their songwriting process.

We sat down with Jay, Eli and Nick from Music for Animals a few weeks ago in our studio, and discussed the new EP and the band’s ability to write songs that work equally well on record and on stage. We’ve also included four songs from the band’s catalog–two from their new EP and two from their self-titled album–in the episode.

This week’s episode is presented by KQED Interactive and sponsored by Bloomsday Rising.

This week’s podcast features San Francisco experimental pop sextet maus haus, a band that ranks as one of the most promising young groups in Bay Area indie music. We were intrigued when we first heard that Aaron Weiss (ex-Social Studies) and Jason Kick (The Lovely Public, Social Studies) were working on a new project, and the band’s self-distributed demos–from which we included songs here and here–set early expectations quite high with a unique sound that eschewed guitars for a pastiche-driven mix of synthesizers, classical instruments and drum machines.

With Krautrock and off-kilter baroque pop serving as two of innumerable touchstones on Lark Marvels, the group’s debut which comes out today, the band has developed a freedom to try anything while maintaining the focus needed to harness such an unlimited sound palette. It’s remarkable too that a group with this many members who have been involved in a number of acclaimed projects could succeed cohesively in the studio or on the stage. Having discussed this issue with the band, it seems that through some mixture of dedication and luck, the guys have developed a collective intuitive understanding of sound and performance. With that collective consciousness intact, the band’s future looks full of potential.

We spoke with five-sixths of maus haus a few weeks ago in our studio, discussing how the band has managed to channel its members’ diverse musical ideas and interests. We’re excited to include four songs from Lark Marvels alongside excerpts of the interview.

This week’s podcast episode spotlights San Francisco’s Loquat, a quintet who create catchy melodic indie pop with a mix of electronic and traditional rock sounds. In 2005, the band released It’s Yours To Keep, a full length debut that continues to win new fans with its seductively catchy songs. In the three years that the band’s been working on their next album, their live shows have continued to please crowds, including a set at the Bay Area Takeover that remains one of our South by Southwest highlights. Today, the wait for the band’s next CD is over, with the release of Secrets of the Sea on Talking House Records.

A lot of bands tend to overwhelm the listener with electronic layers and production tricks, but Loquat’s sound manages to feel simultaneously full and slinky. There’s sophisticated songwriting at work here, but the well-placed synth sounds and funky low end make it super danceable as well. Add to that Kylee Swenson’s strong vocals and moving personal lyrics, and you’ve got an album that should appeal to fans of indie pop and synth-rock alike. It’s also an exciting next step for this very talented Bay Area band.

We sat down with members of Loquat a few months ago, discussing the long creative process behind the new album and the band’s plans now that it’s out. We’re pleased to include four songs from Secrets of the Sea along with excerpts of that conversation.

This week’s podcast features Berkeley quartet Winter’s Fall, a band that deftly mixes indie atmospherics with driving country-rock to create a unique, exciting sound. When we received the group’s self-titled album earlier this summer, we were quite simply blown away. It’s an astonishingly fully-realized work, especially considering that it’s the band’s first full length release. Lead singer/songwriter Peter Stanley’s voice feels like the perfect conduit for his heartfelt lyrical imagery, and both blend well with the group’s layered, engaging songwriting.

The band includes a mix of longtime friends and family, which might explain how effortlessly they found a sound after forming in late 2006. 2007’s Muddy and White EP featured strong songwriting filtered through a lo-fi production aesthetic. For their self-titled release, however, the band recorded most of the album live, capturing a big sound that makes the most of their dynamic shifts. Throw in some horns and a whole lot of synthesizers, as the band does, and it adds up to a high-quality listening experience.

We sat down with the band a few weeks back in our studio, discussing their lyrical and musical inspirations, and their continually evolving sound. We’re pleased to include four songs from Winter’s Fall alongside excerpts of our conversation.

<itunes:summary>This week's podcast features Berkeley quartet Winter's Fall, a band that deftly mixes indie atmospherics with driving country-rock to create a unique, exciting sound. When we received the group's self-titled album earlier this summer, we were quite simply blown away. It's an astonishingly fully-realized work, especially considering that it's the band's first full length release. Lead singer/songwriter Peter Stanley's voice feels like the perfect conduit for his heartfelt lyrical imagery, and both blend well with the group's layered, engaging songwriting.

The band includes a mix of longtime friends and family, which might explain how effortlessly they found a sound after forming in late 2006. 2007's Muddy and White EP featured strong songwriting filtered through a lo-fi production aesthetic.

We're pleased to include four songs from Winter's Fall alongside excerpts of our conversation.

This week’s podcast spotlights The Mommyheads, a quartet that left an indelible mark on indie pop music during their eight years as one of San Francisco’s best bands, from 1990 to 1997. During that time the group released several acclaimed records–including 1995’s Bingham’s Hole, which some consider one of the decade’s best albums–before calling it quits in the aftermath of major label difficulties that hampered their final self-titled release. After eleven years apart pursuing solo projects and other endeavors, bandmates Adam Elk, Dan Fisherman, Michael Holt and Jeff Palmer reunited earlier this year to record You’re Not a Dream, a collection of unreleased songs written during the band’s heyday, but fleshed out with updated arrangements and production.

While their name might not be as familiar as other beloved 90s cult acts, The Mommyheads’ influence is readily apparent in the music of bands like Death Cab for Cutie and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, and it’s easy now to see that their eclectic lyrical mix of power pop with a touch of funk was very much ahead of its time. The group’s legacy aside, though, You’re Not a Dream is a remarkable return after eleven years off, and a terrific collection of songs in its own right. Given the excitement that The Mommyheads’ reunion is generating among longtime fans, one hopes that the new record is just the beginning of the next chapter for this remarkable band.

We sat down with The Mommyheads a few days before the first show of their reunion tour in San Francisco, discussing the group’s history, the San Francisco music scene in the ’90s, and the lost tapes that inspired the new album. We’re pleased to include four songs from You’re Not a Dream along with excerpts of that conversation.

<itunes:summary>This week's podcast spotlights The Mommyheads, a quartet that left an indelible mark on indie pop music during their eight years as one of San Francisco's best bands, from 1990 to 1997. During that time the group released several acclaimed records--including 1995's Bingham's Hole, which some consider one of the decade's best albums--before calling it quits in the aftermath of major label difficulties that hampered their final self-titled release. After eleven years apart pursuing solo projects and other endeavors, bandmates Adam Elk, Dan Fisherman, Michael Holt and Jeff Palmer reunited earlier this year to record Yoursquo;re Not a Dream, a collection of unreleased songs written during the band's heyday, but fleshed out with updated arrangements and production.

While their name might not be as familiar as other beloved 90s cult acts, The Mommyheads' influence is readily apparent in the music of bands like Death Cab for Cutie and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, and it's easy now to see that their eclectic lyrical mix of power pop with a touch of funk was very much ahead of its time. The group's legacy aside, though, Yoursquo;re Not a Dream is a remarkable return after eleven years off, and a terrific collection of songs in its own right. Given the excitement that The Mommyheads' reunion is generating among longtime fans, one hopes that the new record is just the beginning of the next chapter for this remarkable band.

We sat down with The Mommyheads a few days before the first show of their reunion tour in San Francisco, discussing the group's history, the San Francisco music scene in the '90s, and the lost tapes that inspired the new album. We're pleased to include four songs from Yoursquo;re Not a Dream along with excerpts of that conversation.

This week’s podcast features Bart Davenport, a Berkeley native whose lengthy music career has spanned R&B, garage rock, and electronic pop with The Loved Ones, The Kinetics, Persephone’s Bees and Honeycut, as well as several well-received albums as a solo singer-songwriter. After years of successful touring with Honeycut, Bart now returns to the solo artist world with Palaces, out today on Antenna Farm Records. Full of compelling catchy melodies and great pop songwriting, Palaces is definitely one of the best records we’ve heard this year.

Initially planned as collaborative effort with local producer and songwriter Kelley Stoltz, Davenport found himself taking over the reigns when scheduling conflicts directed Stoltz elsewhere with only a handful of songs completed. Perhaps as a result, the album draws from across the talented performer’s broad spectrum of musical tastes, with songs ranging from folksy to funky and melancholic to upbeat. And while Stoltz, the guys from Honeycut, and others appear on the album, it’s clearly Bart’s show as he manages to channel his love of classic R&B and pop into a thoroughly modern affair.

We spoke with Bart a few weeks back for a fascinating discussion of tour stories, evolving musical influences and more. We’re also excited to include four songs from Palaces in the episode and you should be sure to catch Bart live at his CD release show later this month, or on his upcoming national tour.

This week, the podcast features a mix of terrific new songs from some great Bay Area bands alongside our latest follow-up interview with a band we profiled long ago. In this episode, we check in with Elephone, whose latest album Canister finds them further exploring dark textures and catchy melodies with equally high skill. We sat down with Ryan, Sierra and Terry in our studio to discuss the inspiration behind the new record, how Sierra’s joining the band has developed their sound, and each member’s favorite songs on Canister.

About all of the bands:

We first interviewed San Francisco’s Elephone (”El Jefe”; later, “Day For Night” and “As Seen On TV”) after the release of their last album about two years ago, so it was great to speak with the band about their exciting new work Canister, available from Talking House Records. You can hear more at Elephone’s MySpace page and can see them live on August 27th at Bottom of the Hill. Be sure to also check out the video for “El Jefe” here.

Mixing jangly country-rock with a modern rock feel, The Red Verse (”Circles”) have created a unique sound that lends itself well to the band’s driving songwriting and Alex Oneil’s compelling vocals. The quartet, which also features former members of Beulah and Every Move A Picture, recently released their debut album No Chance For Romance on local favorite Tricycle Records, and you can also visit them over on MySpace.

<itunes:subtitle>This episode features music from The Red Verse, Winter\'s Fall, The Action Design, The Trophy Fire, and Jonathan Meek and The Mute. Also included is an interview with Elephone and three tracks of their newest album, Canister.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>This week, the podcast features a mix of terrific new songs from some great Bay Area bands alongside our latest follow-up interview with a band we profiled long ago. In this episode, we check in with Elephone, whose latest album Canister finds them further exploring dark textures and catchy melodies with equally high skill. We sat down with Ryan, Sierra and Terry in our studio to discuss the inspiration behind the new record, how Sierra's joining the band has developed their sound, and each member's favorite songs on Canister.

About all of the bands:

We first interviewed San Francisco's Elephone ("El Jefe"; later, "Day For Night" and "As Seen On TV") after the release of their last album about two years ago, so it was great to speak with the band about their exciting new work Canister, available from Talking House Records. You can hear more at Elephone's MySpace page and can see them live on August 27th at Bottom of the Hill. Be sure to also check out the video for "El Jefe" here.

Mixing jangly country-rock with a modern rock feel, The Red Verse ("Circles") have created a unique sound that lends itself well to the band's driving songwriting and Alex Oneil's compelling vocals. The quartet, which also features former members of Beulah and Every Move A Picture, recently released their debut album No Chance For Romance on local favorite Tricycle Records, and you can also visit them over on MySpace.

Winter's Fall ("Paper Chains") recently released their self-titled debut full length, and it's a thoroughly engaging mix of indie, country and folk rock sounds. You can hear more at the band's MySpace page and web site. They will be performing at the Rickshaw Stop on September 10th.

Featuring former members of Tsunami Bomb, San Francisco's The Action Design ("Landmines") serve up tight, danceable rock-pop on their new album, Never Say, available on September 23rd from PopSmear Records.
This week, our podcast spotlights Excuses for Skipping, a San Francisco indie rock quartet whose 2007 debut Out of Work Early has earned them a bevy of strong reviews for its mix of spacey experimental elements and thick soaring melodies. The album showcases a strong control of both dynamics and layering, as the band can use powerful stacked vocal harmonies and guitars just as well as it can deconstruct those textures into compelling moody pieces. It’s catchy, dense rock with strong moments spread liberally throughout.

As we learned during our interview with the group, that seemingly familiar but unplaceable atmospheric rock sound comes from a willingness to experiment with styles drawn from their diverse musical backgrounds and frequently inspired by their other artistic interests. While the band arises out of something of a songwriting experiment for guitarists Tammy and Linda, the addition of bassist Wendy and drummer Allison have added a dancier feel now reflected in the band’s frequent and well-received live shows at local clubs, house parties, and street festivals.

In addition to an interview we conducted several weeks back with Tammy, Linda, and Wendy, the episode includes four songs from the band’s debut album.

This week’s featured band is Judgement Day, a violin-cello-drums trio from Oakland that plays instrumental rock that’s as intense as it is unconventional. Unlike the many who abandon their early instruments for guitars, Anton and Lewis Patzner use their classical training to explore rock motifs, amplifying the results through the manipulation of a variety of effects pedals and the similarly strong drumming of bandmate Jon Bush.

The Patzners’ innovative use of effects and the band’s heavy sound have led many to label their band “string metal,” although their unique setup and ability to go acoustic or electric means that the trio continues to play shows with punk rockers and indie poppers alike. As we learned during the interview, the process of recording their second full length album has found them exploring slower tempos and different sounds, moving from string metal to heavy, powerful rock. They’ve also gained experience accompanying other more veteran groups on tour, as they did recently with Mates of State.

We sat down with Anton and Lewis a few weeks ago in our studio to discuss Judgement Day’s upcoming album, the group’s early performances, and the things they’ve learned from playing with other bands. We also recorded an exclusive impromptu jam featuring Anton on violin and Lewis on percussion. It’s a great performance that showcases the band’s intuitive sense of creativity and eye-widening musicianship.

<itunes:summary>This week's podcast episode is our latest in the Live This Month series, spotlighting some of our favorite local and touring bands playing some excellent shows in August. Check out some information on all of the bands below:

We kick off the show with a song from Innocent Ghosts, the debut album from Geographer ("Each Other's Ghost") (Feature Podcast). The band celebrates the new CD's release with a show we're presenting at Cafe du Nord on Sunday, August 17th. The concert also features headliner Judgement Day and Cotillion.

Preston School of Industry ("Somethings Happen Always") leader (and Pavement alumnus) Spiral Stairs headlines Parkerpalooza V on August 23rd at 12 Galaxies. It's a packed lineup, with Still Flyinrsquo;, Kelley Stoltz, Hank IV and more.

After multiple albums as a studio-only project, We Is Shore Dedicated ("Tindersticks and Russian River") will have their first live performance at the Hemlock Tavern on Thursday, August 21st. It's a great all-local bill, also featuring The Old Fashioned Way and The Lonelyhearts (Feature Podcast).

Touring behind their debut full length National Road, Portland folk-rock quartet Bark Hide and Horn ("Treasure of the Everglades") have a couple of upcoming Bay Area dates. The band will be at Mama Buzz Cafe on August 20th, with Beatbeat Whisper (Feature Podcast) and Dame Satan. They'll also be joining Jackpot at Cafe du Nord on the 21st (more details below).

Trainwreck Riders ("Alemony Wildlife Refuge") (Feature Podcast) are one of twelve great local bands performing alongside fifty local craft vendors at the Rock Make Street Festival on Sunday, August 24th, on Treat Street between 17th and 18th Streets. The festival's free and all day and should be a great time! You can read all about it here, and we'll have more details in the coming weeks.

Sacramento's Jackpot ("Chemical Reaction") head to the Bay this month for a date at Cafe du Nord on Thursday, August 21st. Two Sheds (Feature Podcast), Kings Queens, and Bark Hide and Horn also perform.

San Francisco's The Union Trade ("Talk") release their new album Everyday Including this month, and are headlining a Tricycle Records showcase at Bottom of the Hill on Wednesday, August 27th. The show's also the CD release party for One Becomes One Hundred and features a performance by Elephone (Feature Podcast).

Seattle synth rockers Head Like A Kite ("No Ordinary Caveman") are touring in support of their new album There Is Loud Laughter Everywhere. The band joins Scissors for Lefty and DJ Bagel Ted at the Rickshaw Stop on Saturday, August 30th.

Austin's The Octopus Project ("I Saw the Bright Shinies") return to San Francisco on their seemingly never-ending tour, with a August 16th stop at Bottom of the Hill. The Hot Toddies (Feature Podcast), Sassy!!!, and Diagonals are also on the bill.
