Deerhoof – “The Trouble With Candyhands”
August 3, 2012

Via Polyvinyl:
Deerhoof drummer Greg here to introduce you to our latest record.
We’ve been called a lot of things, as you know. But pop has always marked the spot on the Deerhoof treasure map.
Pop = catchy
Pop = new
Pop = no rules
So if you want to go dancing or do karaoke with Deerhoof, you don’t have to ask twice.
We’ve just finished a sensational record of Cuban-flavored party-noise-energy music. We called it Breakup Song, but don’t expect a bunch of Grammy®-baiting sob stories, OK? In Deerhoof’s thesaurus, freedom’s just another word for feeling good again and raising hell and getting away with it. Stick with us and the bad guys with guns will never catch up.
- Greg
Breakup Song is out September 4. Check out the band’s upcoming tour dates below.

Ten Bay Area-Related Releases for Record Store Day 2012
April 16, 2012

This Saturday is Record Store Day 2012, a time to celebrate independent record stores and break the bank snatching up exclusive, limited edition releases. Among the many, many tantalizing offerings coming out on Saturday are the following ten with Bay Area connections. For the full list of RSD releases, head here.

Rhymesayers is releasing a 10″ picture disc featuring artwork by SF’s Jeremy Fish, and new songs from Atmosphere and The Uncluded. The latter is the duo of Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson, who are releasing a joint LP later this year. From the label:
“Bats” is the first track The Uncluded wrote as a group and pays tribute to Mikey “Eyedea” Larsen, former Moldy Peaches member Aaron Wilkinson & Tero “Camu Tao” Smith, all friends the pair had recently lost. On their journey to Austin via Minneapolis to pay respects to their friends Eyedea and Aaron, the song began to unfold and became their way of talking and coping with that loss. “Bats” became the string that sewed the entire journey together.

Deerhoof‘s latest collaborative 7″ is a split with recent tourmates of Montreal. The A-side features of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes adding new vocals and music to Deerhoof vs. Evil‘s “Secret Mobilization,” and the B-side is of Montreal’s new “Feminine Effects.”

Lex Records celebrates ten years with a beautiful-looking picture disc called Complex. The biggest names on the album are DOOM, Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Danger Mouse, but the comp also features new songs from Jel, and Doseone and Fog performing as Crook&Flail.

Random, Happy Memories of 2011
December 30, 2011

Some years are great for shows – like 2008. Some are great years for albums, like 2009. But this was a great year for both, from the start. In the order I remembered them:
Family Crest – My Living Room; 9/11
Duh. Can you believe this alterna-dad cream dream supreme? A stalwart and happy-go-lucky nonet of classically trained musicians show up at my house to play their lovely, life-affirming chamber pop on the anniversary of 9/11 and my teenage son sits in on clarinet? You just had to be there. But then we would have run out of pasta much sooner.
Deerhoof – Great American Music Hall; February 1
They’re just the best, in an age when it has become pointless to talk about the best. You know it’s a good show when legend Fred Frith shows up to sub for the first opener. Deerhoof primed and dimed their uniquely cereberal, detached shredding and just blew it out every pore. Great pix from Charlie Homo.
Tune-yards – Rickshaw Stop; August l5
When Merril Garbus takes the stage, it’s chills, thrills, more chills and a house full of sweaty, jumping converts. This was actually Vetiver’s show – Tunes added late. They were pretty tasty, but ultimately the latest to learn: don’t share a bill with Tune-Yards unless you like being used as a mop. [More...]
