The Bold Italic & Dusty Stax present Hollywood Babylon Spring Formal
March 19, 2013

It’s that time of the year again! The Bold Italic and Dusty Stax are hosting their annual spring dance on Saturday, March 23rd, and for this year’s theme they’ve grabbed inspiration from the classic Hollywood days of glamour and scandal chronicled in the 1965 book Hollywood Babylon, which was initially banned upon its release. Hollywood Babylon Spring Formal will be held at Potrero Hill’s Verdi Club and is sure to be an affair fit for the most famous district in Los Angeles:
Ladies, there can only be one Black Dahlia and only one Jane Mansfield, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pay homage to the infamous and tragic trailblazers of American style. Gentleman, it’s time to slick that hair, shave that beard, starch that collar, and don your neatest, most impeccable suits (heck, rent a tux) and show ‘em what you’ve got. We’ll have the full red carpet treatment so you can make your grand entrance to what will prove to be another famously memorable night.
In true San Francisco fashion, this party is another excuse to dress up:
Dress Code: No denim will be permitted. For fellas: ties and collars are a must, and leave those sneakers in the gym bag. Ladies: you know what to do.
So dust off that old Hollywood glam dress you’ve always wanted to wear, that tux you’ve only worn once and round up your friends for an evening of old fashioneds and martinis. Providing entertainment for the night will be Gold Star Soul Revue, Golden Girls, Quinn DeVeaux, Kelley Stoltz and an impressive lineup of DJs that includes Spencer Owen. Purchase tickets over at the Eventbrite website and RVSP on the Facebook event page to spread the word!

Dusty Stax/Bold Italic Winter Dance Formal Party, featuring garage rock supergroup (12/10/11)
December 2, 2011

The Verdi Club will be hosting fantastic events two Saturdays in a row. This Saturday, December 3rd, will feature the Bay Brewed (sorry, couldn’t resist). And next Saturday, December 10th, Dusty Stax and the Bold Italic have put together a very special event in the spirit of the holiday. This Winter Formal Dance will feature classy attire and a plethora of local garage rock musicians:
Over the summer, Dusty Stax’s “Let Her Dance” took San Francisco back in a time machine for a huge celebration of ’60s soul. Guests donned their vintage best and packed the Verdi Club as local garage rock greats offered their takes on timeless songs by Curtis Mayfield, the Bobby Fuller Four, and others.
This time, Dusty’s taking it up a notch for the holidays, and we’re joining forces to co-host a proper Winter Formal. Join us by dressing sharp and celebrating a night of shakin’ your stuff with a live soul revue supergroup with a 9-musician strong backing band. The lineup includes an All Star Girl Group featuring Turn Up Records Recording artist Heidi Alexander (The Sandwitches), Shannon Shaw (Hunx and His Punx), Noelle Cahill (Magic Trick) and Jen Snyder (Jonesin’).
A few fellas will sing along too, including Sonny Smith of Sonny & the Sunsets, Kelley Stoltz, and your host Dusty Stax, crooning out favorites by Ike and Tina, Irma Thomas, and The Crystals to name a few. Dick Vivian (Proprietor of Rooky Ricardo’s Record Shop in The Lower Haight) will work the turntables with classic soul singles. He’ll also be offering instruction on how to dance like a pro!
You can find out additional event details and purchase tickets over at the Bold Italic.
