Live This Month: November 2010 (Podcast #236)

In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the next 30 days in the San Francisco Bay Area. November’s got a ton of great shows, with multiple bands from Denver (Tennis, Gauntlet Hair) and Philadelphia (Sun Airway, Kurt Vile) making noteworthy appearances, while a bunch of locals celebrate the release of new CDs (Eux Autres, Faun Fables, The Definite Articles, The Parties). Enjoy the mix and then go check out some shows!

About the bands:

Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier is the debut album from Philadelphia art-pop band Sun Airway (“Put the Days Away”). On November 5th, they’re opening for Bear in Heaven and Lower Dens at The Independent.

SF band Eux Autres (“Go Dancing”) celebrate the release of their latest album, Broken Bow, at El Rio on November 18th. Writer and Sporting Life round out the lineup.

Denver indie poppers Tennis (“Marathon”) have built a strong buzz on some extremely catchy singles. They’ll be at the Hotel Utah with Eulogies on November 14th.

New Yorker Elizabeth Harper makes electronic disco-pop as Class Actress (“Careful What You Say”). She’s performing along with Small Black and Young Prisms on November 6th at The Independent.

SF band Wet Illustrated‘s (“Born Stoked”) debut single, out now, was recorded by Tim Cohen. They join Honey and Burnt Ones at Amnesia on November 4th.

Jangly pop band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (“Say No To Love”) have been working on a new full length recently. The band joins labelmates Weekend and Seattle’s Grave Babies at The Independent on November 9th.

Kurt Vile‘s (“In My Time”) new 7″ debuts a cleaner sound from the songwriter and a hint of what might be to come on his next full length in 2011. The Soft Pack and Purling Hiss join Vile at the Rickshaw Stop on November 9th.

Bay Area retro-pop practitioners The Parties (“Let’s Call It Love”) released their latest work, Coast Garde, yesterday on Rainbow Quartz Records. They’re part of an all-local bill at the Hemlock Tavern on November 19th, alongside The Love Dimension and Trevor Childs & the Beholders.

Personal Life is the new album from indie pop-rock band The Thermals (“I Don’t Believe You”). They’ll be at The Independent on November 15th and The New Parish on the 21st.

Pomegranates (“50′s”) return to the Bay with One of Us, their third album. They’re performing at the Rickshaw Stop on November 15th. Oh No Oh My and Big Tree are also playing.

Denver duo Gauntlet Hair (“I Was Thinking…”) have released a steady stream of exciting, noisy pop songs over the past year. Epicsauce presents Gauntlet Hair, Woodsman, Craft Spells, and Melted Toys at Milk on November 11th.

The Definite Articles (“Bumbershoot”) are a local chamber pop band whose first full length, King Merriweather, comes out this month. The band’s celebrating with two release shows at 32 Ocean on November 19th and 20th.

Oakland experimental folk artist Faun Fables (“Parade”) releases Light of a Vaster Dark on Drag City this month. They’ll be at The New Parish on November 14th with The Cairo Gang and Lasher Keen.

Review & Photos: Allo Darlin’, Eux Autres, Terry Malts @ Rickshaw Stop, 10/27/10

November 1, 2010

I intended to check out Terry Malts several times this year, and was excited to learn that they were added to Wednesday’s showcase at the Rickshaw. The MySpace suggests they are from Bummer Town, CA, and their ‘web site’ is a massive list of taquerias in Redwood City. They are consistently compared to the Ramones, and I suppose it is undeniable, but they are so much more.

Terry Malts played a great deal from their debut, cassette only release, distracted. The guitarist donned a Shannon and the Clams hairy chest shirt and played a hollow body guitar distorted to buzzy perfection. A few songs featured shared vocals that sounded a bit like Nodzzz if they used meth instead of Ritalin. There was a delightful sloppiness to the show, and my only complaint is that the band seemed a little uncomfortable with the few minor errors that occurred. Embrace sloppiness Terry! It works. Terry Malts play the Hemlock on November 10th and Oakland’s mysterious Sugar Mountain on November 12th.

Next up, SF quartet Eux Autres, which apparently means ‘Them Others’ in French. The web site explains the pronunciation is ooz-oh-tra. I got no problems with the French, but I’m not sure a US band name should require assistance with pronunciation. It took a few songs for them to get things right, but they finally nailed it on “When I’m Up,” with well-shared vocals, expertly pounded drums (via Yoshi Nakamoto of Aislers Set and Still Flyin’ fame) and even some church bells ringing via a nifty little xylophone in a box! Allo Darlin’ say that Eux Autres are their most favorite band in the world, and I can see why. The band includes rarely heard brother/sister vocals, and occasional lyrics in French (where French belongs). Broken Bow, their third album will be celebrated with a release party at El Rio on November 18th. Check them out.

Review: Tune-Yards, Social Studies, Eux Autres, Knight School at Popfest, Rickshaw Stop 5/27/10

Knight School at SF Popfest 5/27/10
Photos by: Nic Buron

SF Popfest 2010 kicked off with a split bill of sorts at The Rickshaw Stop. NYC’s Knight School and Eux Autres, from SF, offered variations on bare bones guitar pop, while locals Social Studies and headliner Tune-Yards took the second half of the evening in a more refined direction.

Knight School reproduced their lo-fi singles with power, courtesy of Jedidiah Smith’s deft skills at the drumkit. Eux Autres have a few more cards in their hands. Leaders Heather and Nicholas Larimer share vocal duties, in the model of their professed idols The Vaselines. And they sing many of their songs in French. Both groups can write appealing songs. But, without denying them their due, it must be said that both are still searching for some sort of leavening agent – a sound, an approach or an energy – that would separate them from the pile of like-minded indie rockers.

Hot on the heels of Remixes comes the first offering from Citay‘s third album Dream Get Together. According to Dead Oceans:

Coming January 26th (January 25th in the UK), Dream Get Together channels everything we love about Citay into their most cohesive and sophisticated album yet. The symphonic dueling lead guitars, soaring vocals, grandiose acoustic explorations and audacious synth solos are all present, sewn together seamlessly into an epic work.

Citay will be at Slim’s on January 29, 2010.
