Thursday, 6/17: My First Earthquake release ‘Crush’ @ Rickshaw
June 14, 2010

Thursday night, get crushed: My First Earthquake is releasing a new EP, Crush at the Rickshaw Stop (9pm, $10). The EP was recorded in one day at Hyde Street Studios, and its four songs ring true to MFE’s fun, clever pop with its upbeat rhythms and catchy melodies. The EP is available for free download right now at MFE’s Bandcamp page.
In describing the sound on the EP, the band says they are drawn to Beck and Prince, “who can explore styles and timbres but still keep a recognizable sound.” They added, “two of the songs on the EP are our most stripped down, while the other two have a ton going on: multiple vocal parts, rich synth parts, and a half-drunk mariachi band, for starters.” I’m going to repeat that last part for emphasis: “a half-drunk mariachi band,” hoping that footage of this concept ends up in one of their sweet videos.
In anticipation of releasing a full-length (possibly to be funded through Kickstarter), they’re giving this EP away free to “get the karma tumbleweed rolling,” as frontwoman Rebecca Bortman describes it. You can pick up a copy of Crush at the EP release party, where they’ll be joined by The Downer Party and The Attachments.
While you’re waiting for Thursday to come around, you can also download their album Downstairs, free for this week on Bandcamp.

Noise Pop 2010: !!!, Maus Haus, Sugar & Gold, My First Earthquake @ The Mezzanine
March 3, 2010
!!!, Maus Haus, Sugar & Gold and My First Earthquake all brought their A-game to the Mezzanine last Saturday night.

My First Earthquake, a local electro-pop quartet, opened up the night with their snappy humorous ditties. “Sack Lunch” – about a pervy teacher (Rebecca’s words, not mine) – and “Hot Girlfriend” were the standouts of the night. Lead singer Rebecca Bortman is a born show-woman, ribbing her band mates and chatting up the audience before prompting us to rock the fuck out. “Cool in the Cool Way” (which has an accompanying video about Mission hipsters), with its Nintendo-inspired synth riffs, prompted the band’s coordinated, pixelated outfit accents and closed out the band’s 45 minute set.

(I feel like this guy deserves mention. He came to the show dressed as Tron.)
Tron is a My First Earthquake fan.
Sugar & Gold were a woman down — I was informed by Nicolas after their set that Fatima, their female vocalist, was out sick — but no less sassy for their limited line-up. Sugar & Gold’s set was made up of equal parts of the following: songs from their 2007 full length, Creme, songs from their upcoming album, Get Wet (due out April on Antenna Farm records), sexual innuendo and raccoon tails.

The Rumble Wednesday: Jaguar Love, My First Earthquake, Butterfly Bones
February 2, 2010

This month’s edition of the Rumble, while still true to form, will be extra special. First, given that the festival is rapidly approaching, this event is being billed as a “Noise Pop Warm-Up.” Second, the event is saying a sad goodbye to its Harlot roots and moving over to begin a new relationship with Cafe du Nord. And third, the 26th edition of the Rumble will help to celebrate not just one, but TWO birthdays: the 5th birthday of the Owl Mag, and the 7th birthday of one BAGeL Ted and his internet radio genius.

Jaguar Love – “Up All Night”
As per usual, the Rumble (presented by Future Sounds, Stranded in Stereo, and the Owl Mag) will be one big party, with bands and drinks and dancing galore. Jaguar Love from Portland will headline, preceded by local bands My First Earthquake and Butterfly Bones, with DJ sets by BAGeL Ted in between. The event starts at 9:30 pm, 21+, and is free with RSVP via Sonic Living ($5 otherwise).

My First Earthquake: album release show Saturday @ Cafe Du Nord
June 16, 2009

The members of San Francisco’s My First Earthquake come from very different backgrounds. Two members used to play in metal bands, one helped develop essential parts of the iPod, and the other used to play in a band with We Are Scientist’s Keith Murray. With so much experience and diversity, it is only natural that the group have taken it upon themselves to release their own debut album, Downstairs. Their record release show goes down Saturday at Cafe du Nord (9:30, $10) with Blue Rabbit and B and Not B.

Downstairs is a display of the do-it-yourself spirit culminated. A notable track on the album is “Vow to Vowels.” With its catchy dance rhythm, organ melody, driving bass, and infectious vocals, one can’t help but get out their seat and shake it a little (or a lot). The whole album treks across the landscape of tight-synth induced dance pop, making a promise out of the four musicians abilities as a group. You can pick up the new album at the show.

Our latest Monthly Mix episode of the weekly podcast includes music from nine great Bay Area bands with a bunch of newly released CDs. About all of the bands:
We kicked off the show with a song from the always entertaining Battlehooch (“Take The L-Train”), off their brand new full length Piecechow, out June 15th. They’ll be at 111 Minna on Thursday, May 28th and their official LP release party is June 24th at Bottom of the Hill.
Oakland’s Dreamdate (“Have I Told You”) recently released their second album Patience on Skywriting Records. They’re on a West Coast tour through the first week of June.
Originally from Wisconsin, A B & The Sea (“Suzie”) were recently named “Best Beach Boys Worshippers of 2009″ by the SF Weekly. The band — who have been working on a new album — will be at The Independent on June 5th.
Jonesin’ (“Rollerskates”) is the duo of Matt Jones from Master/Slave and Jenny Jones. Although there’s a lighter pop touch here, Matt’s love of vintage synths thankfully remains. Head to the band’s MySpace page for more.
Local indie poppers My First Earthquake (“Cool In The Cool Way”) release their first full length this month, entitled Downstairs. They’ll be celebrating with a CD release show on June 20th at Cafe Du Nord.
