Frisco Freakout returns: psych-fueled benefit show at Thee Parkside on Saturday

Local psych rock bands converge on Thee Parkside this Saturday for the fourth annual Frisco Freakout, a day-long, all ages fest benefiting Creativity Explored. The bill includes Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, Carlton Melton, The Imajinary Friends (ex-Brian Jonestown Massacre, first show in 15 years), and Harderships (including Isaiah Mitchell of Earthless), but the most interesting set of the day might be the debut of Wicked Mace, a trio that includes Comets on Fire’s Ethan Miller and Noel Harmonson.

Tortured Genies (members of Sonny & the Sunsets) – “Brown Leaves” / Sunsets record Aquarium Drunkard session

Brown Leaves by Tortured Genies

While SF’s Tortured Genies include Sonny & the Sunsets‘ Tahlia Harbour, Ryan Browne, and Zack Ehrlich, the psych-pop on “Brown Leaves” feels more than a bit removed from the Sunsets’ proto-rock jangle. That said, “Brown Leaves” is a really pretty song, and a good sales pitch for the band’s show on Tuesday, August 9th with Sunbeam Rd. and Roommate at the Hemlock Tavern (9pm, $6).

By the way, Sonny & the Sunsets recently cut a session for Aquarium Drunkard. The three song set is definitely worth grabbing over at AD’s site.

The Bay Bridged Presents: Fourth of July at El Rio!

Okay, so there are a bunch of good shows coming up, but wherever you plan to spend your time this weekend, make sure to cap it off with the Sixth Annual El Rio Big Time Freedom Fest at El Rio on July 4th (3pm, $8, 21+), featuring performances by John Vanderslice, Tartufi, Low Red Land, Walking in Sunlight, Finn Riggins, and Whisperlights. More info and music can be found here.

John Vanderslice – “Convict Lake”

Tartufi – “Dot Dash”

Low Red Land – “Better Angels”

Neko Case, Dodos perform at Stern Grove

In between tours in support of No Color, The Dodos are performing a free Stern Grove concert on Sunday, July 3rd (2pm, Free). They’ll be supporting Neko Case, who performed vocals on a bunch of No Color songs. Is an on-stage reunion obligatory, or just highly likely?

The Dodos – “Don’t Stop”

Neko Case – “People Got A Lotta Nerve”

Ty Segall @ GAMH 2/9/11

Ty Segall brings Goodbye Bread to the Independent

With Goodbye Bread getting very strong reviews, Ty Segall kicks off a West Coast tour with a headlining date at The Independent on July 2nd (9pm, $8/10). Show up on the earlier side for Mikal Cronin, who released a psychy collaborative LP with Ty last year and is also a member of the terrific Moonhearts.

Ty Segall – “You Make the Sun Fry”

Is it possible to hear a beautiful surf-inflected instrumental like “Mr. Lucky” and not get a sense of melancholy? The song is the B-side to Sonny and the Sunsets‘ new “I Wanna Do It” 7″, out April 12 on Fat Possum. That’s also the release day for the band’s new full length, Hit After Hit, too.

Huichica Music Festival brings J Mascis, Sonny and the Sunsets and Fruit Bats to Sonoma winery

April 1, 2011

The Gundlach Bundschu Winery in Sonoma just announced the lineup for its second annual Huichica Music Festival on Saturday, June 4th (2-11pm). The show features eight bands on two stages, including headliners Fruit Bats, J Mascis, and Sonny and the Sunsets. Have you heard that new J Mascis mostly-acoustic record, Several Shades of Why? It’s quite stunning.

J Mascis – “Not Enough”

In addition to the big three, also performing are Richard Swift, These United States, Breathe Owl Breathe, Tu Fawning and David Williams.

Fruit Bats – “My Unusual Friend”

Breathe Owl Breathe – “Swimming”

Okay, so it sounds awesome, right? The only potential drag is the ticket price: general admission tickets are $55 per person (including a complimentary wine tasting). Still, that’s a strong lineup in what sounds like a pretty special venue. If you’re game, tickets go on sale April 5th at 10am.

The Soft Moon and Water Borders join Salem at 103 Harriet

So yes, Salem was once attached to some pretty unflattering live videos, but King Night is undeniably engulfing and it’s been a year since that infamous SXSW show. In their first SF performance, at 103 Harriet on Wednesday, March 30th (8pm, $12.50), the band’s topping a bill stacked with locals, including The Soft Moon, Water Borders, WhITCH and Shawn Reynaldo.
