About this week’s bands:

Independent People (“Consolation”) is the solo project of one Brant K., who released Independent People in April. The project has also spawned a series of videos on Youtube.

Formerly of the band Photons, Ben Davila (“Eucalyptus”) wrote one song a week for an entire year. He’s now collecting those tracks and releasing them in four EPs over the course of 2010.

Singer-songwriter Kate Kilbane (“Sweet Unknown”) finished her first solo tour in SF and now calls it home. Her Medea Cycle EP collects songs written from the perspective of the Greek heroine.

Change is in the Weather is the latest EP from electro-soul band Blood and Sunshine (“Change is in the Weather”). They will be at Cafe Du Nord on July 20th, with Con Brio and The California Honeydrops.

Indie pop duo Camp Out (“Closer”) is currently touring the Northwest. Their debut album Closer is out now on Swordfish Records.

The Aimless Never Miss create ‘The High Dive to Lo-Fi, Volume 1′

The Aimless Never Miss – “SOB”

Releasing what they’ve named a “trans-genre” album, The Aimless Never Miss introduce their first self-released full length, The High Dive to Lo-Fi, Volume 1. The album’s witty name and its audible diversity work hand-in-hand as quite the entertaining contradiction. About the The High Dive, which is for sale on the band’s website:

It’s taken over 2 years to produce, and is by far our most ‘experimental’ album to date. The 13 tracks range from rock to folk, Americana, punk, gypsy-jazz, and into the indescribable…If you like music that can’t easily be defined, and are bored with albums where every song sounds like the last…

Some new members will be playing live with TANM on Saturday at Fort Gallery in Oakland (683 26th Street at Martin Luther King), where the band will be joined by Judgement Day and The Burning of Rome.

Happy Hour @ Bender’s and Stephen Malkmus at Great American Music Hall

February 27, 2009

Kelley Stoltz

If you’re smart, you’ll find yourself down at Bender’s for the Noise Pop Happy Hours.  With $3 West Coast IPAs and specials on Fernet, this is the place to loosen up before the evening’s shows.

Bender’s got a bit of a facelift for the festival thanks to the guys at Knight Visions Production and Design who are providing stage lighting for all the festival happy hours.   They also added some nice ambient lighting to the origami cranes hanging from the ceiling.

On Day 2 of the festival I caught the Aimless Never Miss.  Frontman Jonny Latimer apparently was suffering from a bit of a sore throat, but you’d never have guessed the way they were rocking.   This was a full on rock show.  Amps roaring, cymbals crashing…the whole nine yards. [More...]

Review: Built for the Sea, the Aimless Never Miss and Silian Rail – Family Show at Cafe du Nord

January 30, 2009

The Aimless Never Miss - Photo by: Julie Schuchard

Correction: This show was presented by Lower Class Revolt, not Thread Productions. We apologize for the original mistake.

After meeting Jonny Latimer of both the Aimless Never Miss and Built for the Sea at the Bottom of the Hill, I’d been looking forward to this show all week. First off, it was at Cafe du Nord, which happens to be one of my favorite venues in the city. It feels like it belongs in the television show True Blood alongside the vampire bar Fangtasia. Antique couches line the rear of the club and a deep scarlet red is seen literally everywhere. The first step, well, she’s a doozy no doubt about it. It can definitely be dangerous later in the evening when one is more likely to find themselves a few too many drinks deep. Besides the great drink deals, the place always has a reputation for bringing in some great indie rock names.

The Aimless Never Miss – “The Bright Side”

Bandloop and The Lower Class Revolt teamed up to bring us Silian Rail, the Aimless Never Miss, and Built for the Sea in a special family show. It was a family show because they’re all friends with each other and decided to toy with mix and matched lineups throughout the evening, making for a damned good time. [More...]
