Free shows this week: Thee Oh Sees, Fool’s Gold, Best Coast
December 5, 2011
By some strange coincidence, there are three free shows in SF this week. Details and RSVP info below!

Wednesday night, Thee Oh Sees head back to school for a free show at SF State’s The Depot. They’ll be joined by locals Cool Ghouls (“Influences: tall cans, 40s, blunts, parties, guns, 40s, crime”) and Twin Steps, whose terrific new 10″ of punky early-rock can be streamed below:

Thee Oh Sees recently played a Drambuie-backed free show at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall; the liqueur returns to the B&M this Thursday night for a free show featuring Fool’s Gold, Dirty Ghosts, and TOS’ Mike Shoun DJing. RSVP here to get on the list.

Mixtape: Music to Drink Beer to (Podcast #261)
Think of our latest mixtape as something of an hour-long indie music/beer pairing, inspired by our upcoming The Bay Brewed rock and roll beer festival. On Saturday, December 3rd, we’ll be at The Verdi Club, for performances by Weekend, Sleepy Sun, Extra Classic, and Terry Malts, and unlimited local craft beer samplings from 21st Amendment, Anchor Steam, Beach Chalet, Drake’s Brewing, Lagunitas, Magnolia, Marin Brewing Company, Social Kitchen & Brewery, and Speakeasy. In this mixtape, we’ve collected music from 21 local indie rock, garage, lo-fi and psych bands whose rocking tunes serve as great beer-drinking music. Seriously, give this mix a try with a pint and we think you’ll agree.

Thee Oh Sees – “The Dream”
October 28, 2011

If my memory serves me correctly, “The Dream” was the final song of the Thee Oh Sees‘ Treasure Island set, and it’s the second track leaked from the band’s Carrion Crawler/The Dream, coming 11/15 via In the Red. Like “Carrion Crawler,” which was almost six minutes long, this one nearly makes the seven minute mark without overstaying its welcome in the slightest. Dwyer and company proved they could pull off longer songs with the epic “Warm Slime” last year, and it’s exciting to see them continuing to experiment in that vein. (Via Pitchfork)

Don’t miss at TIMF 2011: Local openers (Geographer, Thee Oh Sees, Weekend)
October 13, 2011

There are many reasons to arrive early to the Treasure Island Music Festival this weekend: short lines for the festival shuttles, plenty of time to explore the festival grounds, picking out choice spots at the Bridge and Tunnel Stages, and most importantly, catching this year’s local openers.
This year’s set of locals represent some of the best of the Bay. Geographer will open the festivities on Saturday, while Weekend and Thee Oh Sees will occupy two early slots on Sunday.

Thee Oh Sees productivity update: band to release another new 7″
October 10, 2011

Thee prolific Oh Sees have a new full length album coming in November, but the band’s also got a new 7″ as part of Edition Fieber’s artist-curated series of releases. You can listen to both songs from the 7″ below, and can hear artist David Shrigley’s companion 7″ over at EF. A word of warning before you get your wallet out: the price tag EF has put on this set is insane (to the tune of 129 Euros plus shipping). (Via Pitchfork)

Treasure Island 2011 is this weekend! Night shows this week too!
We’ll be spending a bunch of time this week exploring the many prospective highlights of this weekend’s 2011 Treasure Island Music Festival, and the fest is our top recommendation for the week. In addition to the two days on the Island, there are a bunch of night shows to check out, including The Drums, Thao with The Get Down Stay Down (with Bare Wires and The She’s) and more.
